10 Things You Didn’t Know about Mister Terrific

Mister Terrific is a DC Comics superhero. However, it is important to note that the name has been used for two characters, with the first being Terry Sloane and the second being Michael Holt. Generally speaking, Mister Terrific refers to Michael Holt because he is the character who exists in the “present” of the DC Comics setting while Terry Sloane is his predecessor from the Golden Age. Here are 10 things that you may or may not have known about Mister Terrific:

1. Genius

Primarily, Mister Terrific is famous for being a genius. Said characteristic enables him to learn even the most complicated skills with incredible ease, as shown by the fact that he had picked up 14 Ph.Ds by time that he had chosen to become a superhero.

2. Exceptional Athlete

With that said, Mister Terrific’s incredible talents aren’t limited to the realm of the intellectual. Besides being a genius, he is an athlete who is capable of not just competing but also winning on the Olympic level.

3. Has Super-Tech

Mister Terrific isn’t a super-capable inventor in the same sense as, say, Marvel Comics’s Ironman. However, he nonetheless has some access to super-tech, which are used for both minor and not so minor purposes. For example, his mask is made out of nanites, thus providing it with a number of useful functions. With that said, it can’t match his T-Spheres, which are floating robots that can fly, slam into people, create holographic projections, manipulate other electronic devices, and more besides.

4. Invisible Technology

Curiously, Mister Terrific has one superpower by the rather strict definition of superhero comics. In short, he is invisible to electronic devices in the sense that his presence can’t be picked up by them. There is an exception to this rule in the form of the android Red Tornado, which is presumably because Red Tornado is actually an android possessed by a wind elemental.

5. Devastated By the Loss of His Wife

There are a lot of superheroes who turn to superheroics because of personal loss. In the case of Michael Holt, he was devastated by the loss of his wife, which was made even worse by the fact that she was pregnant with their child at the time. Matters became so bad that Michael contemplated suicide because of his overpowering sense of guilt.

6. Skeptical About Souls

In some stories, Mister Terrific was skeptical about the existence of souls in the DC Comics setting. This is hilarious because he was saved from committing suicide by the Spectre, who is empowered by the setting’s version of the Abrahamic God. Regardless, the Spectre did so by relating the story of the first Mister Terrific, thus inspiring Michael to follow Terry Sloane into superheroics.

7. The Two Have Met

Superhero comics being superhero comics, Michael and Terry have met up through time travel shenanigans. On the whole, Terry has been pretty pleased by his successor, so much so that he has expressed a sense of pride in Michael.

8. Friendly Rival with Batman

It is interesting to note that Mister Terrific is a friendly rival to Batman, which makes sense considering their intellectual as well as their physical capabilities. Besides this, Mister Terrific started up his own high tech business, which he proceeded to sell to Wayne Technologies, which is one of the business units of Batman’s corporate empire.

9. Member of Checkmate

Primarily, Mister Terrific is known for his membership in the Justice Society of America, seeing as how he rose as high as the position of chairman. However, he has been a member of the covert operations agency called Checkmate as well, which is associated with the UN of all organizations.

10. Has Appeared in Live-Action Projects

Mister Terrific isn’t one of the most famous DC Comics superheroes such as Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman. However, he isn’t exactly an obscure unknown either. For proof, consider the fact that he showed up in Smallville. Moreover, version of the character called Curtis Holt has shown up in Arrow as well, who is very similar to his comic book counterpart but nonetheless possesses enough differences to make it easy to tell which character is which.
