This is One Weird File Sharing Project
I’ve seen some weird file sharing methods before but this one has got to take the cake. What you are about to see is known as the Dead Drops Project. It was designed to share files peer to peer and to be anonymous offline. There is a readme.txt file that explains the entire project. What’s so unconventional about it is that a person can plug their laptop into a pole, wall, or building to use it.
If you live in New York, here are some places where you can find them:
87 3rd Avenue, Brooklyn, NY (Makerbot); Empire Fulton Ferry Park, Brooklyn, NY (Dumbo); 235 Bowery, NY (New Museum); Union Square, NY (Subway Station 14th St); 540 West 21st Street, NY (Eyebeam)
I wonder what people are sharing on those projects.. and who protects them from being overfilled with virusses or porn..
it’s an awesome idea tho
as soon as too many people know of this it will be:
80% porn
19% virus
1% usefull stuff
but still a great idea
No joke, here.
The Internet is going to turn into T.V., only traceable, and this will be how we keep the ball rollin’.
Isn’t Stuxnet transfered by flash drive?
This sounds like an insanely bad idea.
What if it rains?
The positioning of the laptop seems unwieldy. It would be surprising to see people getting mugged at one of these “Dead Drops” just because they happen to be awkwardly perched over their monitor or their head getting slam into a wall.
I guess the point is to see how devious people are, as the FAQ section states that the creator knows the system will inevitably be abused, and vandalism (both physical and digital) is to be expected.
He doesn’t mention porn, but c’mon…
