On first glance this may look like some random shot of a kid playing N64 and it is, but it’s the context that’s important.
This is apparently this kid’s first contact with the system, and as he was raised on the Wii, you can see that he has a unique way of holding the controller that resembles how one might wield a Wii nunchuck.
It’s a subtle moment to be sure, but one that’s made me feel exceptionally old as it’s hard to imagine a generation of kids growing up with the Wii as their first system. I’m not sure whether to laugh or cry at that fact.
man i was playing soul caliber 2 on the game cube the other day with my girlfriends little brother (who is now 15). and he said the game cube was his first system. he kept talking about how retro and cool it was. i wanted to rage.
It makes me happy that I grew up in the 90s
we used the n64 controlers like nunchucks too, but only to beat us when someone was dominating… f**k, time goes by!
If you feel old, how about this? I grew up pre-pokemon. Thats right, pokemon was the stupid new game for babies that brought on the end of the golden video game/sat morning cartoon age. (I still stand by that statement.)
Me too JZ. My first system was the Intellivision. I have fond memories of Cops & Robbers and Burgertime.
My first video game memory was Joust on my older sibs’ Atari 2600. We got the NES for Christmas 1986. My daughter cut her video game teeth on a PS2 and Game Cube. My son on a PS3 and Wii.
Same here, JZ. I’m 27. When Pokemon first came out, I remember thinking all the younger kids collecting cards and playing the Gameboy games were stupid. It may have been the first time I ever had that “Things were cooler when I was younger” feeling. Heck, I remember my dad getting an NES before I was even old enough to coherently play it. Time does fly.
How about seeing the 25th Anniversary Special Edition of a DVD for a movie you can fondly remember seeing in the theater as a child?
Reminds me of the madMen clip on the Emmys opening sketch. Jane Lynch says “In the future, we can watch TV on our phones!” , so Roger sterling picks up the rotary receiver and holds it over his eyes.
My cousins did the same thing with my N64. I introduced them to Donkey Kong 64 as a way of keeping them occupied and they kept getting frustrated because waving the controller didn’t make the monkey move. =/ mehhh….
My first game system was a Sega Genesis, I chose it over SNES, I felt it was more hardcore haha
My first game was a text adventure.
I’d say laugh because its there misfortune for not growing up with it in the first place.
@JZ Are you kidding me? The original Pokemon games (Red and Blue) were amazingly fun games, and original too.
Now you’ve got the bajillion spin offs and sequels and cartoons just to simply cash in on the brand now. I could care less about all of that (Pokemon Snap is the only acceptable spin-off title imo) since it’s mostly just rehashed with slighly updated graphics and newer looking Pokemon.
You can trash talk what Pokemon has become all you want, but you shouldn’t trash talk the originals.
Btw, my first systems were an Atari and a Colecovision and I’ve been gaming ever since.
My first video game system was a pile of rocks and a few sticks, then a new game came out called ” Another stick and a rock” it…blew…my…mind.
