We Need to Talk About These Kids Meal Spongebob Toys

What is up with Burger King’s latest Kids Meal toys? The global hamburger fast food chain has partnered with Nickelodeon Television since 1998. The fast food chain often sells Nickelodeon cartoon toys with its Kids Meals as a promotional tool for the popular cable television network. The most recent toys sold with Burger King Kids Meals has people scratching their heads however. Are the latest SpongeBob Squarepants promotional items cute, creative, odd, or just plain creepy.

Here is what we know about the latest SpongeBob toys sold with Burger King’s Kids Meals.

Burger King – Nickelodeon History

Burger King and Nickelodeon have partnered in promotions since 1998. Burger King began selling Rugrats toys with its Kids Meals that year. The partnership with the popular children’s animated television series would continue for several years. In 1999 Burger King also sold toys related to Nickelodeon’s popular animated series Cat Dog. That year the two companies came together to promote Nickelodeon’s annual Kids’ Choice Awards show. Burger King also promoted the animated Nickelodeon series The Wild Thornberrys.

SpongeBob Squarepants premiered on Nickelodeon in 1999 and soon became a hit cartoon among both kids and their parents. The animated creatures living and interacting at the bottom of the ocean in Bikini Bottom may not have been a very educational children’s television show, but parents could laugh along with their kids at the show’s silliness and its double entendre jokes. Burger King and Nickelodeon have partnered since 2001 selling SpongeBob promotional collection toys in Kids Meals.

What is available?

Over the past decade and a half SpongeBob – Burger King promotions have been a huge success. Kids (and some adults) love to collect the series of toys hoping to complete the entire set. Up until now the SpongeBob promotional toys have been pretty standard. The character toys have been pretty standard with small plastic toys modeled after the favorite inhabitants of Bikini Bottom: SpongeBob SquarePants and his beloved pet snail Gary, Patrick Star, Sandy Cheeks, Squidward Tentacles, and Mr. Krabs.

The latest collection of SpongeBob Squarepants toys offered with Burger King Kids Meals consists of 28 plastic molded. There are 5 lines including SpongeBob Squarepants, Patrick Star, Squidward Tentacles, Sandy Cheeks, and Mr. Krabs. Each line has a special gold colored mold of each character. These gold toys are rare so exciting (maybe valuable) to collect all 5. Each line has versions of the character morphed with another SpongeBob Squarepants character.

Reactions

Reactions to the latest SpongeBob Squarepants toys sold with Burger King Kids Meals range from “cute”, “creative”, “odd”, but mostly “creepy”. It’s a strange concept to see 2 characters from SpongeBob Squarepants combined into 1 plastic toy. Is Sandy Cheeks face morphed onto the body of Mr. Krabs cute? One fan called it “Sandy Claws” while one fan called it “Krusty Cheeks”. One Reddit fan has questioned the reason for the combination. Did the underwater scientist squirrel run out of funding and team up with the money hungry Krabs in some strange scientific experiment? Did SpongeBob visit Star Trek and get mixed up in some type of transporter malfunction coming out as a morph of himself and his best friend Patrick? Are these toys shape shifters? Are they meant to represent a surreal or modern art form? Did the company that makes the toys run out of plastic molds?

Whether you think they are cute or creepy, the latest Nickelodeon SpongeBob Squarepoints sold with Burger King Kids Meals are certainly creating a buzz. As a promotional device, they are effective. An entire collection of these odd character combination toys could become a valuable collection. Whether you like them or hate them, the latest SpongeBob morph toy sold at Burger King are certainly something to see.
