NASA’s Solar Whip Image: I Hope the Icarus 2 is Okay

icarus

What’s that? We’re talking about SCIENCE here? Get out of town. Yes we are, but mostly because…fun fact, the Unreality logo is actually based on a NASA picture of the sun like this one, but turned blue instead.

Anyway, what are we looking at here?

“A burst of solar material leaps off the left side of the sun in what’s known as a prominence eruption. This image combines three images from NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory captured on May 3, 2013, at 1:45 pm EDT, just as an M5.7 class solar flare from the same region was subsiding. The images include light from the 131-, 171- and 304-angstrom wavelengths. Credit: NASA/SDO/AIA.”

Did the Icarus 2 just drop its Manhattan-sized nuke into the sun? I’m going to go with yes.
