What to do if Your Scratch Disk is Full

Scratch space is the part of the hard drive that is used for temporary storage rather than permanent storage. As a result, it is used by countless examples of software that range from operating systems to word processors. Due to this, it is no exaggeration to say that running low on scratch space is something that can impair the function of a computer, which should be familiar to those who have ever run low on storage space on their hard drives.

With that said, having a full scratch disk is something that comes up a lot for people who use Adobe Photoshop as well as other graphic design software. In part, this is because graphic design software needs a lot of scratch space, seeing as how graphic design projects can get rather big. However, it should also be noted that forcing the closure of graphic design software can interrupt its process of clearing the scratch space that it had been using, thus leaving part of that scratch space occupied for no real purpose. Whatever the exact cause of such errors, interested individuals should know that they have potential solutions, though some of these potential solutions can be much more complicated and time-consuming than others.

What Should You Do When Your Scratch Disk Is Full?

There are a number of potential causes for the problem of a mac scratch disk is full error. As a result, it should come as no surprise to learn that there are a number of potential solutions as well.

For example, it is possible that the hard drive is running low on storage space. If that is the case, interested individuals might be able to solve the problem by deleting some of their files for the purpose of freeing up more storage space, which is the simplest and most straightforward solution. Some people might be tempted to see if they can squeeze out some extra storage space by defragmenting their hard drive, but in modern times, that tends to not be particularly useful. After all, modern operating systems often automate that particular process, which is without considering how defragmenting is actually detrimental for anyone using a SSD because said procedure was created for their HDD counterparts.

On a related note, it is possible for Adobe Photoshop and other graphic design software to use up temporary storage by failing to erase the content that was taking up said space properly for one reason or another. As a result, interested individuals might be able to free up some storage space for their use by deleting this improperly retained content. Generally speaking, interested individuals can do so by going to the Temp sub-folder in the Local sub-folder of the AppData folder, but since said folder contains a lot of important files, they need to exercise additional caution. In other words, if they are not sure about what they are doing, they might want to hold off on deleting the temporary files for either Adobe Photoshop or any other graphic design software unless they are sure about what they are doing.

Of course, if freeing up more storage space can help, it stands to reason that adding more storage space can help as well. For instance, interested individuals can add another hard drive to their computer before designating that as a place on which it is permissible to store content on a temporary basis. One example involves going to Scratch Disk Preferences or the local equivalent before designating hard drives besides C:/ as being permissible for that particular use. Another example involves going to Scratch Disk Preferences or the local equivalent for the purpose of switching over to a hard drive that isn’t so full.

Finally, it should be mentioned that it is possible to increase the amount of RAM that can be used by Adobe Photoshop and other graphic design software. Generally speaking, there should be a set of options for Performance, which should have a section for the amount of memory that the software is permitted to use. Interested individuals can increase the amount of RAM that can be used by the software by increasing the number. However, they need to be careful about this because using up more RAM means less RAM for other applications. As a result, using too much RAM could cause other applications to either become unresponsive or potentially lead to even worse outcomes.
