Is Dexter is Shaping Up For Next Season?

Is anyone else feeling this?  Without getting into too much detail about last night’s episode I will say that I’m getting this vibe that this entire season seems to be setting us up for next season.  Dexter has a very good way about giving us “transition” episodes.  The kinds of episodes that are somewhat boring but necessary.

That’s what I think last night was about….

Last night we begin to see Dexter transition back into his role of serial killer.  His mindset is changing.  He’s adjusting to Rita’s death and he’s beginning to seek out a new victim to kill.   What the first episode did was set up the entire season.  Dexter somewhat went off the deep end and created some plots that simply can’t be ignored by police and family.

Deb is clearly a little sketched out by him at this point.  His reaction after the death was cold, weird, and I think left us all wanting more and to find out why.  Then he just out and kills someone in a bathroom?  Clearly there’s work to be done in order to fill in these holes.

But back to last night.  Last night we see the kids up and leave (which is necessary for him to start killing again).  We see Deb’s dumb love affair about to start.  And then we see what we know is going to be a battle.  Quinn is clearly in need of finding out that Dexter is the person he thinks he is:  a cold hearted killer.

Now.  The question is this.  Can all of these plots be filled in and accomplished this season to make it the last?  I just don’t know.  I have faith in the writers to know that the show has to come to and end either this season or next.  I’m very curious if they’ll mush it all into this season or spread it out into one more season.

Clearly last night’s episode was transition like and I’m afraid next week’s may be as well.  Sure he kills someone next week but it won’t be all that climactic.  Almost because Dexter doesn’t want  it to be.

The show is still one of the best on television.  Just curious what you guys think…..

  1. I agree, but I’m also sick and kind of out of it, so I’ll probably have to go and re-watch it. Honestly though, I’m sort of hoping that this is the last season. As much as another one would be cool, this type of show can only go so long with out it being…I dunno…uh, gimmicky? I guess I just hope it ends before it starts going bad.

  2. I was actually kind of hoping this was going to be the last season, kind of ending it before it goes bad, I’m interested how a season with dexter in court/jail and how his coworkers react to him being the killer. (even though, in this crazy incident he’s innocent) would he be found out as the true bay harbor butcher? would he confess? would he win his innocence?

  3. My wife and I said the exact same thing. Last night’s episode was a transition episode. Were shown some key season elements though. “Blood Vision”, is this something he’s going to be doing all the time now? Dexter is lashing out more. He scared the chocolate out of that female Fed. His new kill doesn’t excite him. Is he getting bored with killing? Will he concentrate on developing his new emotions? Cry already dude!!!

I still think Trinity didn’t kill Rita. He would have mentioned it before Dexter offed him. The neighbor dude is suspicious to me. Anyone else wonder why Rita looked so peaceful and all the other tub victims looked like unbridled carnage?

  4. All I know is Quinn is the new Doakes….

And all last night my friends and I were walking around going “You have to TAKE IT!”

    F’in motivational audio books.

  5. “He would have mentioned it before Dexter offed him.”

He did, in a veiled sort of way. Just as Dexter was about to kill Trinity, he says something to the effect, “I’m not like you! I have a family blah blah blah I won’t ruin them!” and Trinity says something to the effect of, ” It’s too late you already have”. When Dexter finds Rita, that scene plays again in flashback, implying that THIS was what Trinity meant, that he had already killed Rita and, thus, destroyed Dexter’s family.

  6. Bah, hit the button too soon.

I think the show is building to some kind of big shift in Dexter’s world this season. My guess is, either he is going to get caught and go to jail or going on a bloodthirsty bender and walking away from his old life completely. I kind of hope for the later.

  7. Since the episode where Rita told Dexter she was pregnant, I have begging for a final season in which a 50-something year old Dexter teaches his offspring how to live by “Dexter’s Code”. Make it happen, writers!

  8. I was more than annoyed that the Dexter/Kyle Butler link wasn’t made by The FBI…I really wanna see Dexter get manhunted at least once like he was in Season 2. Watching Dexter cover his ass is fun. The kids were brutal BUT the last scene with them was very well done. I’ve always said Dexter himself is a child and those scenes really spelled it out. Frankly…I’m glad Astor and Cody are gone. Felt kinda Deus Ex Machina BUT I’m guessing the writers knew that Astor would get on our nerves with her constant -_-, so I can forgive that.

Shawn Hatsoy and These Santa Muerta people…eh…we’ll see. I’m worried this Season will become sub-plot heavy. Too many guest stars…
