Six Movies That Made Me Want To Be A Witch

There’s two things I wanted to be when I was younger – a figure skater and a witch. (Hey, there’s an idea for a movie! The story of a figure-skater witch.) My obsessions came from two places, NBC’s figure skating TV coverage and movies. Actually, it was probably Sabrina The Teenage Witch that started my craze with the whole “witch” thing. The thought of having magical powers was so enticing that I lost myself in these witchy characters. Then I discovered Harry Potter and realized that I wasn’t the only one who craved the supernatural. Below is a list of the movies that made me want to a witch.

The Craft

I considered putting Suspiria on this list just because that movie is wickedly awesome. But when I really thought about it, Dario Argento’s film didn’t make me yearn for magical powers and a pointy hat. It scared me. The Craft is by no means Suspiria, but it’s not a funny movie like say, Hocus Pocus. It’s actually quite terrifying because it shows the drawbacks of being witch. Still, I was a teen girl once and I would have given anything to be a part of Nancy’s coven.

Hocus Pocus

I’ve had a long-standing tradition ever since I can remember, which is to watch Hocus Pocus once on Halloween. Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy were the silliest and goofiest witches, but it was their innocent humor that hooked me. I’m so glad I fell in love with this movie as a kid; I would have probably hated it as an adult.

Bell, Book and Candle

Who wouldn’t want to be young, gorgeous and fashionable like Kim Novak? I wasn’t a big fan of Bell, Book and Candle as a whole, but Kim Novak? She, and her cat, were awesome.

The Witches of Eastwick

Alexandra, Jane and Sukie have got to be the best looking trio of witches ever. They weren’t the greatest role models, but they sure did have great hair.

Teen Witch

High school would have been much more tolerable (less of a “walking, talking tragedy”) had I been a teenage witch. Teen Witch is a cult classic. I doubt the remake will top it.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban is the movie in the series where muggle-born Hermione Granger became a true witch. She was always an awesome, clever kid, but in Azkaban she was the hero. Then there’s Bellatrix, Mrs. Weasley, Professor McGonagall, Luna Lovegood and tons of other Harry Potter witches that are equally awesome and notable.

  1. no Practical Magic? I’m surprised. My daughter watched Hocus Pocus religiously a few years back and I liked it – not quite as much as she did though. any movie that can manage to make SJP look sexy is pure sorcery in itself.

    1. I didn’t include Practical Magic because I didn’t see it until a couple of years ago and I thought it was fun, but I’m just not a Nicole Kidman fan, so it sort of turned me off. That’s my reason. It’s still fun though.

  2. Of this list, I have only seen The Craft and Harry Potter in their entirety.

I would also like to add Little Witches for Clea Duvall’s nude scene. I would have joined what ever cult that existed if it meant getting nude with Clea Duvall.

  3. No Romero’s “Season of the Witch”? Instant fail. It’s the law. If you can think about being witch and it isn’t you walking down the street gathering ingredients to Donovan’s tune with the sweet, sweet bassline then you, madame, can be no witch at all.

I haven’t seen ‘Season of the Witch’ but I will make a note to do it. thanks!

  5. I fell in love with Susan Serandon in Witches of Eastwick. It was the look she gave Jack Nicholson before she jumped his bones that made me think, “That’s the kind of school teacher I want.”

Another witch movie that was great (but not in the way that it would make you really want to BE a witch) was The Witches with Anjelica Huston. Kind of creepy for a kids movie but it was also based on a Roald Dahl book so that says something. It was also the last movie Jim Henson personally oversaw the special effects for.

  6. I loved “The Witches”. Sure, you wouldn’t want to be a witch once you watched the scene where they reveal their true appearance, but it’s such an amazing movie.

  7. i saw Hocus Pocus in theater when i was a kid like 3 times. Only till like late last year did i realize that “sexy” blonde was that female horse bred of a woman, SJP… she is… just…ugly… pure fucking magic is what happened to her in SJP… some kind of spell is put onto me when i watch it

  8. What?! You didn’t include The Worst Witch? lol I think that was Fairuza Balk’s very first role as a witch. Not a great movie, but it has Tim Curry so that makes up for it a little

  9. Hocus Pocus and Harry Potter are the only ones I really loved as a kid.

This is bugging me though… the picture for Harry Potter is from Chamber, not from Prisoner!!!
