A Wicked Gallery of Little Red Riding Hood Re-Imagined

For a long time it was vampires, but I’m guessing that the financial success of Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland is going to spawn the next big thing in media: fairy tales re-imagined.  In fact, there’s supposedly a Little Red Riding Hood movie already in production, starring Amanda Seyfried.  For the most part, I’ll probably be opposed to this next trend generally, but for some reason, I’ve always been drawn to Little Red Riding Hood for the simple fact that so much can be done with the story.

The Big Bad Wolf can be symbolic of masculinity, Red herself a symbol of feminism, and the red color she wears as a symbol of her entering womanhood (if you get what I’m saying).  Everything else can be as wild or violent or memorable as you’d like it be, so long as you’ve got some creativity bouncing around in your head.  It turns out that many creative people have been doing just this for years, and I’ve posted what I think are the coolest re-imaginings and pieces of concept art for Little Red Riding Hood that I can find.

Take a look at the gallery below to see what I mean.  I’ve done my best to give credit, but regardless, all art is property of its respective creator.

  1. How about this…… Red Riding Hood as a werewolf slayer of sorts(played by Milla Jovovich). The “Big Bad Wolf” is the original werewolf and thus Red is trying to find him to end the lycanthropic curse………

No? Well fine then. I was leaving anyways……..

I do agree that it could be a neat reimagined fairy tale movie.

  2. @ T-bagg and Madison

I wouldn’t turn down either Kunis or Beckinsale for that role. However, as awesome as that oufit is on Beckinsale, it may be hard for her to be anyone but Selene in that role. The more I think about it the more I like Kunis in that role. Good call Madison.

  3. Actually, this kind of re-imagining would work well for most of the original Grimm fairy tales. The original stories are pretty dark, and that aspect can be played up a bit. Too bad that The Brothers Grimm sucked, or I think we would see more of this in Hollywood.

  4. @ MacGyver1138

Yeah, Brothers Grimm was pretty awful. But I’m telling you, the next big thing is gonna be fairy tales re-imagined. We all know how desperate Hollywood is for ideas…

  5. @ Madison

I won’t be surprised when that happens. I looked up the Grimm stories just to see what all was there, and there are 210 of them. Granted they aren’t all well known, and some probably wouldn’t work very well, but I can imagine Hollywood taking that and running with it. That’s not to mention the innumerable other fairy tales they can adapt.

  6. I’m actually rather in favor of a bunch of really dark fairy tale movies as long as:

    A. they don’t let Tim Burton near them, recent Tim Burton is not good and he’ll fuck up a potentially bad-ass genre.
    2. They don’t let most hollywood people near them now that I think about it.
III. They let me have complete creative control now that I really think about it.

A couple other thoughts I think that anyone who plays little red riding hood should be a red head I think that I could see Emma Stone in the role. I also think it should be a post apocalyptic thing, I have a whole vision for it, now I just need funding.

  7. I’m pretty sure I heard this from some where that the original red riding hood was a metaphor for rape.

whatever, if hollywood is going to take a shot at it, just make sure there is a lot of blood and violence and make sure every one dies. I’m so tired of disney endings . . .

  8. so “red “could be the outcast of the family cause her grandma is a well known goodie -goodie and she get in with the wrong crowd aka the “wolves” then by some turn of events they turn on her and send their top assassin aka the “big bad wolf”. she spends the rest of her time trying to find a way to get out of trouble and make back to where ever it is her granny stay (maybe Wisconsin or over the river and thru the woods) and get back into her grandma’s good grace. It could be on some the warriors (she’s trying to make is back to her grandma’s house while trying to avoid waking up dead)/ new moon (the wolves should be on some shape shifting Sh*t actually turning into wolves to chase her)/ jus some overall bad- assness.. as you may have guessed I have way too much time on my hands and im bored at work..

  9. Though not art, this is a re-imagining written by James Thurber, called “The Little Girl and the Wolf”:
One afternoon a big wolf waited in a dark forest for a little girl to come along carrying a basket of food to her grandmother. Finally a little girl did come along and she was carrying a basket of food. “Are you carrying that basket to your grandmother?” asked the wolf. The little girl said yes, she was. So the wolf asked her where her grandmother lived and the little girl told him and he disappeared into the wood.

When the little girl opened the door of her grandmother’s house she saw that there was somebody in bed with a nightcap and nightgown on. She had approached no nearer than twenty-five feet from the bed when she saw that it was not her grandmother but the wolf, for even in a nightcap a wolf does not look any more like your grandmother than the Metro-Goldwyn lion looks like Calvin Coolidge. So the little girl took an automatic out of her basket and shot the wolf dead.

(Moral: It is not so easy to fool little girls nowadays as it used to be.)

  10. mila Jovovich should play Red and Oliver Goodwill (from call me when your sober by Evanescence) should play the big bad wolf.

And it could be like a forbidden romance and how the wolf lwants to hide his secrete of being a werewolf because they are considered dagerous to the villagers.

Look this up on images it inspired me.

  11. It’s insanely funny, stumbling upon this about a year later, seeing everyone’s comment, hoping for a decent “dark fairytale” from Little Red Riding Hood, and having the knowledge that it’s pretty much Twilight, without vampires (to my knowledge, anyway… they’ll probably end up throwing one in there).
