I Don’t Understand How There’s a New 300, But I Don’t Care

For those of you who don’t know, 300 is without question my greatest guilty pleasure move of all time. I understand that it’s complete nonsense for the most part, but I love it nonetheless, and it remains one of my favorite action film. Though is an action film really an action film when 90% of it is in slow motion? That sort of runs counter to the term itself.

Anyway, I have literally no idea how they’re making another 300, given the end of the first film, and after watching this first trailer for 300: Rise of an Empire, I’m still not sure. I heard it was a prequel, but with Lena Headey showing up, and the plot being about “revenge” on Xerxes, that doesn’t seem to be the case. The rest of it I can’t really decipher, but it does look like 300, and that’s more than enough for me to check it out, even if Zack Snyder is producing, not directing.

In related news, Man of Steel is at 60% on RT, hovering dangerously close to “rotten.” That makes my heart hurt, as I really had high hopes for it. Keep in mind that Superman Returns ended with a 75%, so that doesn’t bode well.

  1. I wish I could see something more than just lots of action. There are new characters etc but it really just looks like one big epic war.

300 is a guilty pleasure film for me too, I hope this new instalment lives up to the first one.

  2. FWIW, IGN liked Man of Steel. I’m willing to give them the benefit of the doubt as movie reviewers tend to be too snooty for my tastes usually. Most of them liked Iron Man 1 because they felt it was making some kind of political statement, I liked it because it was a great action flick and RDJ was a fantastic Tony Stark. That’s my take at least.

  3. Lol at “snooty.” You mean having standards? Like wanting a good script, good/decent character development, good/decent plot, action that serves the story and not the other way around?

F that. I reject ANY movie that requires ANYONE to say ANYTHING close to or a variation of the following phrases:

“Check your brain at the door”

    “Were you expecting Shakespeare?”

Those are bullcrap copouts for accepting lowest common denominator pap.

Have some standards Morales, it’s really okay.

  4. This is suppose to be about the Battle of Artemisium. Which was a naval battle I believe occurring around the same time as the vents in the Original 300 (battle of thermopylae).

  5. Having standards should mean having your own standards, not relying on other people to have them for you. Some guy whose job is he HAS to go see every new movie because if he doesn’t, he doesn’t get paid is not the guy whose opinion I want. I’ve been watching the movies, watching the shows, and reading the comics only because I want to my whole life. I’m going to have to go with my own opinion over any number of jaded critics for hire.

How many times have they changed this movie now? I could swear it’s changed titles like three times. And the Frank Miller who wrote the original 300 is dead. The Frank Miller who wrote this one is the writer/director of The Spirit. Be afraid.

  6. RT rating doesn’t mean a thing:

New Star trek movie – 87%

    Superman Returns – 75%

and not to mention most pretentious piece of crap Drive – 93% (i know many of you will disagree with me but that movie is bad, and no i didn’t expect some action a la Fast and furious style)

Point is – not any of these movies deserve those ratings. “Professional critics” are full of themselves and most of them have really weird standards. Don’t let any critics influence your opinion, well at least not before you’ve seen the movie

  7. I purposely stayed away from any reviews or critical discussion of the movie because I wanted to make up my own mind. I’ve found that I’m as likely to disagree with the critics as I am to agree with them, so I’ve just given up listening. I’m a fan of most of Superman as a character and all of the build-up to this movie made me really anxious to see it, but also nervous that I would be let down. My humble opinion after seeing it last night, I was not let down in the slightest. Others may disagree but I can only speak for myself, and I won’t rag people who didn’t like it. But I loved Man of Steel.
