Earlier today I detailed my first impressions of Black Ops, which were largely positive, but one of the major issues I had with the game was spawning.
In an effort to keep players close to the battle, and therefore not trekking across the entire map to find the group, often times players are spawned extremely close to the action. This is fine if you’re rejoining your team in battle. this is not fine if recently killed enemies are spawning behind your team engaged in battle.
One YouTuber decided to examine this via a replay of the game (another new feature I didn’t mention, but a theater is much needed addition to multiplayer), and he details specific instances of this happening in blatantly unfair scenarios. Yes, it’s a bit dry, but if you’re a player you should find it interesting.
Bad spawns are the reason why I mostly play Halo. OH WAIT—-
Yeah, spawns are pretty bad in most console MP games. Partly out of laziness, time contraints and/or lack of knowledge. Or, like you said, mostly developers wanting to force the action and not have ADD console players having to walk and find encounters and, therefore, stop playing their games. I don’t remember PC games really having this problem. Although there have never been anywhere near this many PC players playing against each other, as there currently is on console. And I’m thinking people were a lot more patient with games back then.
It’ll always be an issue of playability versus accessibility. MW2 was a shit MP game (yes, it was) and look how many people played for as along as they did. There’s no incentive to change. Only orgs, like MLG, affect and try to improve these issues. There should be more.
I thought it was bad in TDM. I don’t play domination, so I never thought about how shitty bad spawns could really be. I hope they fix this, because I love this game, but I also love NOT being frustrated as hell while playing it.
It basically makes Ground War not worth it. When there is so many people running around, one is bound to pop up behind you almost every time you respond and just annihilate you.
Finally people who agree with me! It has been pissing me off since day 1.
I noticed this problem especially well today playing Team Deathmatch. So incredibly frusterating to continually be killed from behind, no matter how many times you look back and make sure there is no one around.
Apparently Treyarch is going to fix the issue.
“IN PROGRESS Improvements to the spawn system to resolve an issue where negative spawn influencers from specific game events were not always being deleted after the danger had cleared – in some matches, this was causing good spawns to be erroneously flagged by the game as bad spawns, which in turn forced actual bad spawns to get selected later in the match”

you guys hear him near the end? He must be canadian. Made me think of south park.
“This is aboot Diplomacy! This is aboot dignity! This is aboot respect!”
“Wait, wait. Can you tell us what this is *about* again?”
yeah, I cleared a room to have someone spawn less than a foot away from me. He was close enough to just tap the knife button kill me.
It’s a big problem, and one that wasn’t at all present in MW2. It makes black ops seem so much more random and less skill based.
Yeah, they really need to fix this. That’s how I get killed all the time, they just spawn right behind me.
