The World of Warcraft Family

I’m currently trying to establish whether this is cute family bonding, or a recipe for mutual destruction. This family likes to hangout with each other virtually in World of Warcraft, which they would argue brings them together more than families that are always too busy for each other.

While I see the logic, I have to remember that this is World of Warcraft, a game rarely played in moderation, and yes they might be a tight knit clan, but such an activity could easily make ALL of them cut off from the outside world. And if they all have level 80 characters, chances are the game has done just that.

I hope to play video games with my kids someday, but I think you definitely have to set some time limits to be a responsible parent to your kids. Oh god, I’m turning into my own parents! What’s happening to me?!?

Level 85 is the new 80, btw.

most parents want their kids to have a family, these parents obviously dont want that

I don’t see an issue with this. They said that their guild consists of just those 4 meaning there really isn’t any outside interference from other players in their circle. Also it isn’t like they type chat logs to each other they are in the same room talking to each other like any family would.

I say if it works for them then let them do what they want. It isn’t anyones place to tell them they are doing anything wrong.

My family has a guild that bears our family crest. “Ciall Agus Neart” which is Gaelic for “Strength and Reason”. We’ve stopped playing together now, but a few years ago it was the only way we could keep in touch over long distances. It’s my Dad, 3 brothers, 2 sisters in law, 4 nephews, a niece, me and my wife. We played when the game first started up until Cataclysm. I play about a month or two a year and just canceled my account this month, but my wife is still playing(I’m jealous). The game is too addictive, I played for 26 hours straight when Cata came out.

I think its cute to play together with parents and kids, It reminds me of when my Mom was addicted to Duck Hunt, Back in the 80’s.
