Okay What the Hell, Pokemon?

So Pokemon X and Y are about to come out, and with them come new “Super Evolutions” of final form Pokemon. It’s not a fourth evolution per se, but rather each Pokemon turns into essentially a Super Saiyan version of themselves for a short time during battle.

Nintendo has just premiered the final, final forms for the original three starters, the ones most of us know and love and uh…come on now. This is sort of a cool concept, but adding pieces of flair to Pokemon is not really all that cool in practice. Like, Venusaur grew an extra flower on her head? Really? Charizard sprouted two tiny wings on his arms, because his other giant ones weren’t just getting the job one. And though Blastoise is probably the most altered, I thought this one was without a doubt a photoshop joke.

NOPE.

So yeah, I’m still debating whether or not to pick up X and Y, but the series might be too far down the rabbit hole for me at this rate with all the changes that have taken place over the years.

  1. That’s the first time I’ve heard Venasaur being referred to as “her”. Is Bulbasaur a girl as well, or does he have a sex change at some point in the evolutionary chain?

  2. It seems that when a new game in a series comes out, people either give it a hard time for being the same thing as the last generation or say that the new changes are too radical and have turned them off the series. I mean gamefreak essentially just added a limit break system and that’s a deal breaker? Every new generation of pokemon has at least had the decency to bring something different to the table rather than just adding 100+ new pokemon and giving you a new region to explore. Like Douglas, I was really pleased with gen 5 and am looking forward to the NEW experience that gen 6 will offer.

  3. Keep in mind the fact that these new ‘evolutions’ are actually upgrades/boosts for the pokemon in battle. It is a ‘Mega’ form that they can power up to while fight to get an edge on the opponent. That’s why they left off of redesigning the characters completely. It is similar to the Mega digivolution in Digimon and Kiao Ken/Super Saiyan in DBZ.
