Since then, the video game has become one of the best selling franchises worldwide, selling over 52 million copies – and counting.

The original version of the game came out for PC computers and PlayStation. Since then it has had over 15 game releases and spin-offs. The game series also inspired two blockbuster movies in 2001 and 2003 – both time, Angelina Jolie played the English aristocrat and archaeologist seeking to uncover lost antiques and keep them out of the hands of villains.

Clearly, Tomb Raider continues to enjoy massive success in many industries. Check out these 8 interesting facts about Tomb Raider that you probably never knew before.

It seems Lara Croft pops up everywhere – including in graphic novels. The Tomb Raider comic book came out in 1999. It became the highest selling comic book of that year.

3. Lara Croft has appeared on more magazines than any supermodel.

Step aside Gigi Hadid and Gisele Bundchen, Lara Croft reigns supreme with the most appearances on magazine covers. As of June 2016, she has graced the covers of over 1,100 magazines.

4. You can play a Tomb Raider slot machine.

For those of you who like to spin the reels in slot games can enjoy the femme hero in slot version. Playing Tomb Raider just got a whole lot better with cash prizes on slot spins. The Tomb Raider Secret of the Sword slots by Microgaming software has quickly become a hit among gamblers and Lara Croft fans alike. 5. “She” was originally a “he”.

Inspired by the popularity of Indiana Jones and Jurassic Park, creators originally designed the game with a male leading character. The man also explored Egyptian and Aztec ruins and sported a handlebar moustache.

6. Lara Croft then became the saucy Latina, known as Laura Cruz.

After some deliberation, the team behind Tomb Raider decided to change the male lead to a female, especially considering that players had to look at the character’s backside throughout the whole game. Before Lara Croft, the designers came up with a female character named Laura Cruz, a spicy Latina. Creators later refined Laura into Lara, the English aristocrat and adventurer.

7. She got her curves by “accident”.

Lara Croft’s famous curves actually came about accidentally… so they say. Programmers made the mistake of increasing her chest by 150% rather than 50%. Still, they saw the results and decided to keep it in the game… or at least that’s what they tell their girlfriends.

8. The game has broken records.

To date, Tomb Raider has sold over 52 million copies adding it to the top ranks of six Guinness World Records. It holds the titles for the most successful video game heroin, the most recognizable female in a video, the most detailed game character, plus the highest grossing spin-off, thus making Lara Croft even more badass.
