Who Will Win the Game of Thrones?

Major spoilers ahead: You’ve been warned!

Game of Thrones – one of the most delicious fantasy dramas to hit the big screens. George R. R. Martins masterpiece is a bloody story of family, betrayal and deep political struggles. With the impending debut of Game of Thrones season 7 just around the corner, it’s time to revisit a subject which causes a fair few arguments around internet forums. It’s also a question that is popular in Game of Thrones quizzes. So here it goes: who will finally claim the Iron Throne?

The end of season 6 instigated a turning of wheels, hurtling much loved characters towards inevitable battle. Daenerys is sailing towards Westero with a huge army, Jon Snow is now King of the North (and is revealed to be the son of Lyanna Stark) and with Cersei Lannister seizing control of the throne – there’s sure to be more blood to be shed before the dust settles and we finally see a victor.

With her mighty dragons, Targaryen blood coursing through her veins and an amassed army of 200,000 soldiers, Daenerys looks set to rule over the land of Westeros, posing to be the biggest challenger to the throne. While many fans would love to see her finally become the queen, we all know that the Game of Thrones is a complicated story – and her seemingly unstoppable advance could be undone with one betrayal or change of heart.

Could it be Jon Snow then – arguably the ultimate zero to hero story ever told in a fantasy drama. The bastard son of Ned Stark has had it rougher than most characters in the series, but the season 6 finale revealed that he is Lyanna Stark’s son and Rhaegar Targaryen could even be his daddy. With two noble bloods within him – could Jon cast his gaze from the frosty forests of the North to King’s Landing? We’re sure all will be revealed in the upcoming 7th season.

While there are indeed some strong candidates for the throne – one of the most popular theories is that no one will be able to claim the throne. In fact, in the grand scheme of events, the Iron Throne may be most insignificant of all. We have seen countless times during the show how deadly the White Walkers can truly be and they represent the biggest threat in the entire series. Stopping them would require the combined strength of the main candidates for the throne – is it impossible to imagine a new type of kingdom governed by many different kings? We will just have to wait and see.

Regardless of who takes the throne in the end, season 7 is sure to turn the wheels further to an epic and bloody climax. The seventh season of Game of Thrones will begin airing on July 16th 2017.
