As excited as I was that Game of Thrones returned on Sunday, I was also curious to catch the premiere of Mike Judge’s new comedy, Silicon Valley. Naturally, I forgot to set my DVR, but HBO in their infinite promotional wisdom has decided to upload the entire pilot to YouTube. The plan is to get you hooked, then get you subscribing.
I actually really like it. I work at least adjacent to the tech scene as a professional blogger (please hold your laughter) so some of this hits home. It’s a group ripe for mocking that hasn’t really been touched all that much. Plenty of shows have made fun of geeks, but not the geek tech culture that exists out there which is just asking to be taken down a peg. Or two. Or twenty. It’s Mike Judge’s Social Network, and it’s glorious. I really like the lead actor, Thomas Middleditch, who’s the most understated one of the bunch, and there’s a lot of great comedic talent involved here (Martin Starr, TJ Miller).
Check out the pilot for yourself while it’s still online, and subscribe/pirate for more next week.
