The Visual Mastery Behind the Dragons of Game of Thrones

Wired has an interesting little video up where they take us through the process of how the CGI dragons from Game of Thrones were built for last season. The dragons have grown up from little chicklets into dragon teenagers, and they’re very important characters to the show. The problem is, unlike Kit Harrington who can be gorgeous all by himself without the aid of computers, the dragons need to be built from scratch with CGI to be beautiful.

The effects folks talk about how they combined the soaring of an eagle with the ground lift-off of a bat when animating the dragons. And when Khaleesi has to interact with them onscreen? She’s stroking a tennis ball on a stick as a stand in for where the dragons would be, if they were, you know, real. But even if they were it would probably be pretty dangerous to work with live dragons for a TV show, let’s be honest.

Game of Thrones really does work wonders with CGI, and uses far more of it than you think in many, many of its scenes. And even when it’s obvious CGI like the dragons, they’re doing an incredible job on par with any big budget feature film.
