An Overdue Review of the The Walking Dead Season 7 Finale

One of the most popular TV series right now is AMC’s “The Walking Dead”. The show recently concluded their seventh season leaving fans wanting even more. The previous 6th season saw the discovery of more survivor communities causing new alliances to be made and new enemies revealed. Season 7 saw the tensions to escalate as groups started prepping for war.

Seasons 7 recently concluded a week ago. The entire season included a total of 16 episodes. Overall, the season was well received as previous ones in respect to critic reviews. However, the opening episode did draw some criticism as it was extremely violent. The initial episodes of the season did some of the lowest ratings the show has ever received. While the show still is most popular among young audience members, this group’s viewing has declines 27% from the finale that was shown mid-season. The season premiere had a strong showing but the ratings slowly began to plummet with the 2nd episode.

Given the audience’s response to the amped up amount of violence, the later episodes which were in filming were toned down appealing to the audience’s opinions. This pivotal change occurred with episode 8 “Hearts Still Beating” which was the mid-season opener. The character, Rick, seems to reprise a strong role as a leader.  This change has been characteristic of Rick as he has undergone several changes in mindset. This second set of episodes focuses more on relationship building and organizing the communities.

Episode 13 was a turning point in the series in that the last character still clutching to pacifism finally let go.  This is quite significant as the character, Morgan, is one of the original characters from the show’s beginnings. Appropriately named “Bury Me Here”, the episode saw a shift in the plot which helped lead fans to the pivotal ending which left more questions than answers. The final episode 16, dubbed “The First Day of the Rest of your Life”, was one of the most highly praised season finales for the popular show. The final moments of the show featured a tear jerking tribute. Maggie is told by Rick that she made the correct decision to join the fight. However, Maggie admits the decision was made a long time ago when her now deceased husband, Glenn, helped Rick. She states she is taking his lead as she holds Glenn’s watch in her hand.

In true Walking Dead fashion, the show left fans dangling with its ending. While the ending makes fans wonder what is in store for next season, it wasn’t the climactic cliffhanger that fans were given at the end of season 6.  As fans wait until this fall to discover what will occur in season 8, they do have some options to enjoy their favourite show. Not only can fans read the graphic novels from which the show developed, but they may also wish to go to an online casino to enjoy playing a Walking Dead themed slot machine. There have been several versions of slot machine games created using AMC’s hit show as their inspiration.
