The World’s First Hot Tub Made Completely From Ice
People who live in a climate where temperatures often drop well below freezing sometimes have to find creative ways to spend their leisure time. This is certainly the case for Anni and Lauri Vuohensilta. The pair has decided to spend their days performing stunts and experiments in the cold weather and created their own Beyond the Press YouTube channel showing videos of their activities. Some examples of their activities include thrusting red-hot steel into a freezing lake and blowing up a snowman. Their most recent clip shows them in the world’s first ice hot tub at Lake Näsijärvi in Finland.
On Laughing Squid, the English-speaking couple explained how they created the ice hot tub and showed their first failed attempt. It was made completely with ice with not a piece of metal or plastic in sight. Lauri explained that he had estimated that the water would only stay hot for one minute and also discussed how difficult it was to create an ice hot tub.
The main flaw of their first design was that Anni could only just squeeze inside the entrance hole. Lauri joked that although he was sure the public would love to see him in his swimwear, only Anni could fit inside their creation. Following their initial test run, the hole had expanded enough to allow Lauri inside the hot tub. While Lauri endured the extreme contrast of hot water and freezing ice for a full five minutes, Lauri was unable to achieve this.
Finally, the heat of the water against the ice hot tub led to small cracks and holes. Of course, this meant that the hot water from inside the tub began to leak. While an ice hot tub is a novel idea, it does seem that the design flaws and practical issues mean that it is an idea that is unlikely to catch on with hot tub manufacturers or the general public.
