Brother Shoots, Kills Sister Over Video Game Controller

On Saturday, March 17, 2018, a young girl from Aberdeen, Mississippi was shot in the head by her very own younger brother. The reason was due to a simple video game controller, believe it or not. According to reports, Dijonae White, 14 years old, was shot after she refused to give up her video game controller to her 9-year old younger brother.

Monroe County authorities responded to the scene, and the scene they came to was one of unbelievable mess. Sources say that the mother of the children involved was in another room feeding lunch to other kids when the incident happened. It’s not clear as to who made the call to the authorities, and it’s also unclear how the young boy had access to the .25-caliber gun. All that’s been said is that as soon as his sister refused to give him the controller, he went and grabbed the gun. Circumstances are still being investigated.

Dijonae White was rushed to Le Bonheur’s Children’s Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. While medical professionals did their best to save the life of this young girl, White passed away late Sunday, March 18, from injuries sustained from the gunshot.

According to the Monroe County authorities, this situation is new ground for them. It’s hardly believable that anyone should have to go through something so horrific. Even the incident was new territory for the county police. They’ve never had to deal with a kid shooting another kid—a family member to say the least—at such a young age of 9. The county is still not sure what kind of charges will be made or if any charges will be pressed at all. The county is doing their best to ensure that everything is done correctly.

The fatal incident raises so many questions concerning different aspects of the shooting. First off, the most important question is the safety issue of having the gun so easily accessible to children. Is it responsible for children to be aware of a weapon available at home, and should it be so accessible that a 9-year old can get to it so quickly? There’s also the question of how children today are being influenced by their surroundings so negatively. What is it about our society today that pushes kids to go to the extremes of murderous intent? More and more children are dying from the hands of other children using firearms. While the incident in Mississippi may be on the smaller scale, it’s still a life gone; it’s a family deeply affected; it’s a town troubled. There are many implications to just one occurrence. And now, the final question is what will happen to the little boy that committed the crime. Did he know what he was doing? Did he think it through long enough to say that he meant to do what happened? What will his future hold? Because it wasn’t the moment when he pulled the trigger that changed his life; it was when he thought of grabbing the gun to inflict harm on his sister—that was the moment when his life changed.
