Weekly Movie Rec: Once

Today for this segment I’m going to go with something that’s not hovering on the fence between good and bad, or better than you might have thought it would be. No, I’m going with a movie that I truly love, and you should too.

Once won an Oscar (for best original song) but I’m still guessing there are a number of you out there who haven’t seen it. It’s a love story, but not in the way you might expect. The two main characters are known only as “Guy” and “Girl” but are real life musicians Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova. The film follows Hansard as a struggling street singer songwriter who meets Irglova who also has her share of musical talents. The two combine to make beautiful music together (literally, not a euphemism) and develop a special bond in the process.

It may sound like a lame concept to those who usually like bloodthirsty action or crude comedy, but I promise it’s hard to watch this film and not be moved by it. The music is absolutely incredible, and years later, I still listen to the soundtrack frequently. It seems like a documentary, and feels authentic throughout . Perhaps that’s helped along by the fact that friends Hansard and Irglova actually did fall in love during the filming of this movie (aww) and that chemistry translates onscreen.

Watch Once, I think you’ll like it. For a sneak preview, I’ve embedded the Oscar winning track “Falling Slowly” below:

Errr, YouTube is a dick, so you just have to click through.

Agreed. Beautiful movie and an incredible and moving soundtrack.

  • XenoIrish

Fantastic recommendation. They both were in a band called “The Frames” as well, a lot of the music is from there.

I think it was you who originally recommended this movie to me. Good stuff, got it for my sister the following Christmas, my whole family loves it.

I saw this movie and initially I hated the ending, but after I say and thought about it a while, I ended up loving it. A lot I could say, but I don’t want to spoil it.

Really surprised to find this here, as the site’s theme wouldn’t suggest that kind of movie.
I fully agree, beautiful and moving picture!
Great song – really did win an Oscar?!
    Nice one!! 🙂

  • Truly great film. My wife and I were fortunate enough to have 2nd row seats to see Eddie Vedder’s recent solo tour in Philly – Glen was his opening Act and Marketa came out also (she is featured on one of EV’s new tracks from his new solo album). Great stuff – also cool, Eddie dueted Fallins Slowly with Glen.
