Tumbling Through The Big Lebowski Soundtrack

How many of you are fans of the Dude? Perhaps you’ve suggested a time or two to eat at the infamous In and Out Burger only hoping to be told to “shut the f**k up!” If you’re completely lost then you clearly haven’t watched what I would consider one of the finest films by the Coen brothers. A movie about a dude and his rug – the Big Lebowski.

The reason I’m bringing one of my favorites to the forefront is because it was recently announced that the original soundtrack would be making its vinyl debut on November 28th! Now typically I wouldn’t make a big deal out of a motion picture soundtrack, but “certain things have come to light” and need the attention that they deserve.

Going through the playlist on YouTube doesn’t seem to do the soundtrack any justice, but I wanted to give those of you that are in the dark a little glimpse at what you’re missing.

It’s amazing how much the song choice for a particular scene can effect how the audience takes it in. For example, watch this clip of the Big Lebowski opening scene:

Never in a million years would I want to listen to this song “Tumbling Tumble Weeds” by the Sons of the Pioneers. Yet it somehow blends so effortlessly and sets the tone for the movie to come so incredibly well. The brothers do a great job at allowing the music to be at the forefront in the very beginning but as soon as we see Jeffrey Lebowski in the grocery, mulling over his half and half, it becomes the ambient music playing in the grocery itself.

Here’s another example:

Kids – Don’t drink beer and smoke pot while driving, at least not when someone is following you.

I’ve read that the record will be debuting in a cream colored vinyl – how awesome is that?! For fans of Jeffrey Lebowski, Walter Sobchak, Donny, and all the insane characters of this film I’m sure it will be a nice addition to any collection you might have. I know that it will go splendidly right alongside my bobble-head Dude holding his white russian cocktail.

A more recent example of a film that showcases it’s music selection to better compliment the on screen production that you might be more familiar with was Guardians of the Galaxy. Any Unrealtors out there have some favorite soundtracks? Let me know – I’d love to have something to groove to here at work.
