The Ten Best Movie Trailers of 2012
It’s that time of year again, where I start counting down the best of everything on the site. I have some contributor help this year, but I’ll definitely be sticking with my two annual lists, the ten best trailers and ten best movies of the year.
There are few things more satisfying to me than watching a well-made trailer. They can send chills down your spine, even if the eventual film doesn’t end up being good, and I love compiling this list every year.
This time, I’ve decided to ditch what I did last year and I’m ONLY including movies that came out this year, meaning no Man of Steel or anything like that. Since I didn’t do that last year, I ganked a few that would have been on this list like Lockout and The Woman in Black.
So here they are the best trailers of the year, though not necessarily the best films:
10. Snow White and the Huntsman

Why did this one make the list? Well, it takes a certain amount of magic to convince me that a gritty reboot of Snow White was a good thing. This trailer did its job and by the end, I believed that this might not be such a terrible idea after all. The movie itself? Visually stunning, but otherwise devoid of much use.
9. The Perks of Being a Wallflower

Though many action films are on this list, it’s not a necessity to be included. I was quite charmed by the Perks of Being a Wallflower trailer which simultaneously reminded me of being a shy high schooler, and also made me fall in love with Emma Watson. Though that last part probably isn’t that hard.
8.The Man with the Iron Fists

You’ll notice a lack of Django Unchained on this list, and here the RZA actually made a better Tarantino trailer than Tarantino. It made the film look incredibly badass, and combining the kung-fu with rap makes the second half of this trailer…what’s the phrase? “Bumping.” Sorry, I won’t use that again.
7. Skyfall
httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6kw1UVovByw
Skyfall has turned out to be my favorite Bond film in years, possibly ever, and this first trailer hinted at that fact without giving too much away. It’s well paced, exciting and makes it seem like the wait for the film will be worthwhile. It was.
6. The Hunger Games

The final product may have been underwhelming, but damn, was this a well done trailer. That music in the second half is simply incredible, and many will know what a high importance I place on the soundtrack for a good trailer.
The trailer for man with the iron fists was really good, but I ended up despising the movie.
It’s weird, this is the first time I have seen these particular trailers. The British ones have been quite different, in comparison the US ones are borderline spoiler.
I cant remember all the ones I loved throughout the last year that DIDN’T appear on this list, (the list is pretty good) but I do remember loving:
(obviously some of these ended up terrible but this is based purely on trailer)
The Great Gatsby trailer – for the music and visuals.
Cloud Atlas – for visuals and epic-feeling
Life of Pi – visuals
Cosmopolis
Dredd – for pure kickass-ness
Flight – for Rolling Stones music and that crazy upside down plane shot
Argo – music and style
Brave
John Carter
Honorable Mention goes to Gangster Squad, which yes, didn’t come out this year, BUT was supposed to if not for the Aurora shooting and was pure awesomeness in terms of action, editing, and music choice
Holy smokes did you see the new Man of Steel trailer before The Hobbit? Which trailer are you going to knock out of your list for that one?
