So How About That Django Unchained Trailer?

It’s been a while since I’ve featured a trailer that wasn’t somehow superhero or space related, but hey, it’s Tarantino, he’s the exception to every rule.

Like the rule, for example, that a movie made by a white guy about a slave killing plantation owners might be a bit…troublesome to some. But it’s Tarantino! Who the hell cares? The man can do what he wants, and generally what he wants is to make one badass movie. The man rewrote the entire end of World War II for crying out loud.

I wasn’t sure about Jamie Foxx in this role over Will Smith, but it looks like he’s doing a fine job, and it will likely end up being the greatest part of his career. DiCaprio is rarely a bad guy, so I’m looking forward to seeing what he can do under the direction of Tarantino. The man had now officially been directed by practically every fantastic director alive today, from Scorsese to Cameron to Nolan to now Tarantino. Quite the achievement.

  1. If we’re judging from the trailer alone, this looks like QT’s weakest work. But given that there a handful of potent quotables even in this bizarre Dark Shadows-esque fun for the family-style trailer, it’s probably going to kick our asses in the theater all the same.

  2. I have no idea why you’d say this looks like QT’s weakest work? Then again, QT’s weakest would still be completely superior to most films produced in the last 2 decades.

I think this looks fantastic and can’t wait to see it. Christoph Waltz is sooo good, especially with Tarantino. Rewriting the old west.. no one could do it like QT.

DiCaprio looks great as a fancy southerner and I’m sure will do it justice, but I am even MORE excited to see him as Gatsby… what a trailer that is.

Christmas this year is bringing SO MANY great movies.. I’m ready!

  3. “Tarantino lost it a long time ago. The story IS original, but he seems to running a bit formulaic these days.”

    PLEASE..

First of all, every single thing QT has done so in his career has been legendary. Please enlighten me to where he has lost it? Was it Kill Bill? Death Proof? Inglorious Basterds? I’m sorry for your bad taste in movies if you think any of those are sub par.

Kill bill speaks for itself in terms of epicness.

Death proof, I could watch over and over. Sure, there are parts that some seem to think the dialog drags on, but I think it makes a very unrealistic movie seem very real, in a way only Tarantino would do.

Inglorious Basterds.. another epic. Re-writing history the way only QT can see it. He puts so much violence and gore into this movie on the side of good. I love that about this movie, and practically everything else.

There is not one of QT’s movies that is not unique, deliberate, profound and thought provoking — something you do not get in movies these days.

Formulaic?? I don’t think this word can even describe the works of Tarantino.. Sure, he has used a lot of non-linear plotlines in his movies, but why does that have to be his only available direction?? I’m sorry, but his creative genius is far beyond the use of gimmicks. He has proven he can tell his story any way he likes and it will be legendary.. every time you watch it.

I still get chills watching a Tarantino movie, no matter how many times I’ve seen it.

  4. Sam Jackson’s is Leo Dicaprio’s house slave in this, too. I’m expecting some absolutely batshit awesome banter between them.

Say what you will about Tarantino, but I echo Mandy’s point. While he does lift from previous films, he does inject his own style into them, providing films that really aren’t like anything else. The only thing he’s ever put out that I didn’t particularly enjoy was Death Proof, but that still has its moments for me.

Also having the original Django in this is brilliant.

  5. I was looking forward to this based on the premise alone. Now that I have seen the trailer I am even more excited. I loved Waltz in Basterds, and it’s great to see Leo in a Q.T. flick…especially as a bad guy! I’ve always been indifferent to Jamie Foxx, mostly because I haven’t seen a lot of his stuff. I hope he does a good job here.

  6. @Mandy – I meant he was following his own formula he created with his earlier works… which stand as far better examples or Tarantino brilliance than any of his more recent work that you cited in your statement.

  7. @Paul: Will Smith? Seriously? Did you even see him in that other film about a black sassy cowboy?

While I absolutely eat up anything Tarantino this DOES seem kind of weak. I mean, this is QT we’re talking about and the chance it will suck is extremely slim, but the trailer just doesn’t do it any justice (let’s hope). From the trailer it seems just like a blaxploitation film transported back in time, combined with a buddy cop comedy. I’m sincerely hoping I’m wrong, but the trailer really makes me doubt.
