Seven Awesome Movies About Sharks

Shark movies are like reality TV shows. They’re addicting, and almost always terribly bad. The plots usually involve a group of horny teens or college kids going on spring break vacation to some secluded place. That said, I’ll admit that I am not a fan of horror horror movies (Paranormal Activity and the like just don’t do it for me). Give me a cheesy, “horror” shark flick any night.

But don’t take me for a fool. As a fellow shark film enthusiast, I can tell apart the good from the bad. There’s a lot of bad shark movies out there. There’s also not enough shark movies in general. I mean, there’s only so many ways you can tell the story of how a great white got stuck swimming near the shore, right? But people try. And you gotta give ’em credit for trying. Here are seven awesome movies about sharks.

Open Water

Open Water is scary. The movie is based on a true story about a couple who wonders off into the ocean and gets left behind by their tour boat. Director Chris Kentis and his wife, Laura Lau (who also produced), braved the shark infested waters, along with their actors. The sharks they used were 100% real. No mechanical ones. No CGI. They took cinema verite to another level.

  1. “Tintorera” and “The Jaws of Death”! Where my grindhouse at!? Also, I’m with you on Deep Blue Sea. People talk shit, but that is one hell of a fun movie, and it’s a masterpiece compared to 99% of the shark films out there. BWWD is one of the most amazing docs ever, too. Why it doesn’t get aired annually on Shark Week is a mystery to me.
