This latest bit of casting news makes perfect sense, but I’m not sure how I feel about it. Supposedly Jackie Earle Haley is in final negotiations to take over the claws and fedora of Freddy Kruger in the upcoming Nightmare on Elm Street remake.
Now, seeing him as both Rorschach in Watchmen and a pedophile in Little Children, I can safely say that Haley has it in him to play the nightmarish child killing burn victim. But should he?
Haley is a phenomenal actor and this role seems, well, beneath him. Maybe it’s unfair to assume that the Elm Street remake will be as bad as the Halloween and Friday the 13th remakes were, but I don’t think it’s unreasonable thought. I mean, it’s not exactly like casting Tom Hanks as Michael Myers, because Krueger actually has a forceful personality, but still, I think Haley is better than this.
