Memorable Moments in Movies: The Twist in Usual Suspects

Obviously this is a SPOILER ALERT if you haven’t seen this movie.   However I think given how many years it’s been since the movie came out I’m allowed to do this.

Oh and by the way, anyone who says they knew this twist before it happened is a complete and utter liar.  Just like those of you who claim you knew Bruce Willis was dead all along in Sixth Sense.   Yeah right.

Anyway, the revealing of Keyser Soze is one of the best twists in the history of film and it brought about a run of “twist ending” movies in the late 90s and even into today.

The Usual Suspects did one hell of a job bringing back the mystery movie to an apex it hadn’t seen in a long time.

  1. The thing about the Usual Suspects is that it was a great movie even without the twist. The entire story was incredible to watch. The twist at the end was just sprinkles on an already delicious cupcake.

Also, Benicio Del Toro was just incredible.

  2. I didn’t guess Usual Suspects and I didn’t guess Fight Club, but Sixth Sense? Come on now, it was obvious as hell! What annoyed me was that I just assumed that everyone knew he was dead throughout and I was waiting for “the twist” that everyone kept going on about only to find out that was it! I thought there was going to be something /really/ clever! (US and FC though; wow – never had a clue)

  3. I did guess the ending, but only because someone kept telling me over and over and over and over that I will never guess the ending, so of course I just assumed it was the least obvious person, and I was right 🙁

  4. US is one of the least rewatchable movies in my eyes, and it’s mostly because of this twist. Luckily I saw this moviebefore all my friends told me the ending, but even now I can’t rewatch the movie knowing what happened. Don’t get me wrong, I love the movie, and I especially love the ending, but I can’t sit through all of that build up when I know the truth. I do watch this scene all the time, though. It’s a classic.

  5. I didn’t see the twist in the Usual Suspects but I can honestly say that I had figured out Bruce Willis was dead in The Sixth Sense during the restaurant scene. Since I had suspected it early on, I noticed more and more clues as the movie progressed.

I was 14 at the time and my brother still won’t forgive me because I whispered “he’s dead” like halfway through the movie and ruined it for him.

  6. Agree that many people (myself included) figured out The Sixth Sense – didn’t affect my enjoyment of the film. It has been a while since I watched it so I can’t point out a specific point, but it was hard to ignore that no other character in the film paid attention to Willis other than Osment, particularly at the wake of the girl who was poisoned by her mother, when Willis is just standing around and no one acknowledges him – why was he even there? I suppose the dinner scene was pretty obvious as well.
