J. J. Abrams Taking On The Dark Tower After Lost

It’s less lame than it looks.

With Lost fast approaching its final season and Star Trek about to hit theaters, what’s a TV genius to do? Well, apparently adapt one of the craziest book series ever written into film.

Stephen King’s Dark Tower series took him 25 years to write, and once you read it, you’ll see why. It’s one of the most surreal experiences with literature I’ve ever had, and the whole time I was thinking, “This would look awesome on film, but it would never happen.”

Why? Well, not only because Clint Eastwood is too old to play Roland Deschain now, but because the story is so complicated, and so deep, I couldn’t see a film made without losing too much in the process, and I can’t see audiences reacting well to the story which takes mind****ery to a new level.

But if anyone can do it, it just might be J.J. Abrams, who acquired the rights to the series in 2007 after meeting with Stephen King (allegedly a big a Lost fan). The project would allegedly be a Harry Potter-esque seven picture deal, with seven books to cover, but that might be a bit too much for studios to handle. I mean, if Chronicles of Narnia is barely crawling to three movies, I can’t see the (should be) rated-R King series making it past the second feature, even with Abrams behind it. Not that it wouldn’t make an excellent seven film series, but I doubt America’s intelligence and patience to go see the films, making them profitable enough to warrant the continued sequels.

There are few films series that can extend all the way to seven, and they’re either staples of entertainment culture (Harry Potter, James Bond) or they’re awful horror movies (Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm St.). The Dark Tower is unfortunately neither, and I don’t think there are enough die-hard King fans to make the films float that far.

I really hope this happens, I do. I’m just trying to be realistic. But anyways, on to the real question, who would you cast in the movie? Look for my thoughts tomorrow.
