Have You Seen the YouTube Horror Film?

As the internet continues to evolve, there are going to be new and effective ways to tell stories that haven’t even been thought of yet. The concept of a YouTube horror serial seems like a “oh, duh” idea after you’ve thought of it, but YOU didn’t go out and try it did you?

I’m sure there are a few examples of this concept in execution out there, but I recently discovered one of the best ones out there, a series of videos called “Marble Hornets,” which Roger Ebert called “remarkably well done.”

It follows the story of a guy whose film student friend started acting irrationally and moved away, leaving one of his projects unfinished. His friend is now sifting through his tapes, trying to figure out exactly what happened, and things begin to escalate in his own life as he starts to unravel the mystery.

Each video is anywhere from thirty seconds to eight minutes long. The series started over a year ago, and is still updated, the last video posted a week ago. I’d say it’s in need of some editing, as it’s already long enough for a full length features, but I have to say it is incredibly addicting, and even though it can be dull at times, I’ll be damned if I didn’t spend about two hours watching the whole thing last night. Only near the very end do you start to get ANY hint of what might possibly be going on, and I have to say, this is creepier than most commercial horror films released today. I wouldn’t be surprised to see it get an actual film adaptation someday.

Alright, I’ve pulled the first ten videos to get your started below, and after that, I’ll point you in the direction of the rest. Happy hunting.
