Alice in Wonderland’s Original Test Footage

Today I learned something rather interesting. Way back in the day when animated films were drawn by hand, Walt Disney had the actors in the films dress up like the characters they were playing and act out the scenes.

This was so the animators had a reference point when they were drawing, and I guess it helped with the creative process. Trying to record a moving image with a pencil seems like kind of a tall order though.

The video above syncs up the actors’ performances with the actual animation in the film, and I think you’ll agree with me that it’s rather fascinating to watch.

  • Lt. Brannigan

    Jerry Colona is always hilarious.

..animators nowadays still act out their scenes, often multiple times, to see how they should animate it.

It was my understanding that this was the reason why Ralph Bakshi was sacked from Disney – he revelaed that 90% of all of their animation was rotorscoped over the cells of actors acting out the roles. It was Disneys biggest dirtiest secret for many many years.
    Disney Suck!

Thank you, this just made my day.

Oh, to have been a fly on the wall during those recording sessions…
