10 Actors Way Older Than The Characters They Played

We did an article very similar to this some time ago but it focused on movies that were much older.    Like we mentioned movies that were done in the 30s and 40s.   In case you didn’t know in one of the original Romeo and Juliet movies, Romeo was played by a guy who was over 40, yes, over 40!

But it happens in today’s world all the time.   And thanks to Listal, we found another bunch of funny tidbits to share with all of you.

Here are 10 actors who were considerably older than the characters they played….

Alan Rickman in Harry Potter Films

In 2011, Rickman played Severus Snape who is supposed to be 39 years old.   Rickman was 65 playing this role.

Alison Lohman in Flicka and Matchstick Men

At 23 she played a 16 year old in Matchstick Men, and at 26 she still played a 16 year old in Flicka.

Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s

I’ll bet you didn’t know she was 32 when she played Holly Golightly who was supposed to be 18.

Barbara Streisand in Yentl

Streisand was 41 when she played the role of Yentl.   Yentl was supposed to be 17.

Emma Thompson in Sense and Sensibility

Playing the 19 year old Elinor Dashwood, Thompson was 36 at the time.

Alan Rickman is over 65?! He looks amazing!

  • Imaginate

I can’t believe you said moaning myrtle was aged 11-17, she was age 15 through all the movies, the reason for this being she’s a ghost!

  • Prime

    Basically all the Glee “kids”.
None of the main cast are under 21; who each portray 16? 17? year olds. Most are about 25. Harry Shum, Jr. (Mike Chang) and the guy who plays Finn are the oldest of the bunch I believe, who are both 29 atm. To compare, the actor who plays the guidance councilor or teacher or whatever is only 32.

  • Megatron

I like the article, but I have to correct you in that Moaning Myrtle was not ever “11 through 17″…she does not age, she is a ghost.

    • MegaSolipsist

He was saying that he doesn’t know how old she was when she died, so she could be anywhere from 11 to 17.

  • Steve

Michael J. Fox was 30 by the time Back to The Future 3 came out. He was still supposed to be playing a 17 year old.

  • Jake Stone

Moaning Myrtle doesn’t age, being a dead ghost and all.

  • jaromir

Just seen “the girl with the dragon tattoo” last night and they had a funny preview for “21 jump street” that reminds me of this whole list.

  • Rexram

Malcolm McDowell was 28 when he played the 15-year-old Alex from A Clockwork Orange.

I have a dumb question about the Harry Potter age thing: do wizards have kids really early in that universe? I mean, Harry’s parents were 20-21 when he was born. Harry started having kids when he was 21-22.

Isn’t there a “wizard college” or anything they go to after they graduate at age 18? Or do they start their profession once they come out of Hogwarts or wherever?

The mean age that someone becomes a mom in England is 29.5. It’s just weird to me that wizards buck that trend by almost a decade.

  • MetFanMac

@Yautja: Having kids in your early 20s definitely does NOT count as “early”, it’s perfectly normal and (IIRC) also the peak time biologically speaking.

On-topic, it’s voice only but Zac Efron is playing a 12 year old boy in the upcoming Lorax movie. Efron is 24 and sounds nothing like a 12 year old.

  • wada

Alan Ruck was 29 when he portrayed Cameron Frye in “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off”. Mind. Blown.

  • Rob

Joe Pesci, Goodfellas. 47 at the time, while the youngest of his Tommy’s was around 20, as was Ray Liotta’s (then 35) Henry.

  • Ethan

Charisma Carpenter was about 30 when she played Cordelia on Buffy The Vampire Slayer.

  • The entire cast of Grease. None of them is within 10 years of high school age.

  • mark

Not only was Shirley Henderson older than her role, but that’s her real voice. Watch her in Intermission to find out (and see her tell a guy to “go fuck himself”).

  • Stphen Pappas

just wondering did you know the girl that plays knives in Scott Pilgrim was 25 was that movie was shot?

  • MegaSolipsist

It’s very common for actors in their 20’s to play teenagers, so I wouldn’t consider them ‘way older’ than their characters.
