Ten Rules I’m Setting for Myself While Playing Diablo 3

Published by under Lists,Video Games

I don’t smoke, I rarely drink, but I do have some…impulse control issues in other areas. It’s what makes me play Mass Effect 3 for 30 hours in three days after release until its finished. It’s how I watched six seasons of the Sopranos in under a month. Once I get a hold of a piece of media I like, it’s hard to tear myself away from it.

But what if that media has no end? That’s where I run into trouble. My last bout with Diablo II was…troubling. There was always better equipment to get, a higher level to reach. When I awoke from my coma, I’d wasted about three months of my life. I understand how World of Warcraft fiends can waste years, and as such, I’ve never tried the game.

That was a long time ago of course, and though I’ve grown up since then, I’ve realized I’m probably going to have to set some boundaries for myself to ensure such a thing does not happen again. Here are ten rules I’ve come up with to help keep myself in check . Continue Reading »

Now That’s a Real Life Portal Cake

Published by under Images,Video Games

A thousand nerds the world over have probably had a loved one make them a fictional Portal cake for their birthday at least once these past few years, but there hasn’t been one like this.

It’s a Portal cake, with actual portals, and just might be the most genius geek pastry creation I’ve seen. And I see a lot of nerdy cakes doing this job. The gun is just an added bonus, but the way they cut it at a diagonal makes it look even cooler.

Now, a full scale GLaDOS cake? Someone get on that. One more picture of the cake below: Continue Reading »

The Pokedex Project

Published by under Images,Video Games

There’s nothing like a good Pokemon art project, and I’m  not going to overlook one just because it’s in the sketching phase. This is “Project Pokedex” by Lmerlo. His goal was to badassify the original 151 Pokemon, and from what I can tell, it’s mission accomplished.

This is exactly the sort of thing I would have doodled in my notebooks when I was supposed to be paying attention in class. I doubt I would have gotten through them all, but props to the artist for doing so. Check out the full gallery below, and pray Nintendo wises up and makes a grown-up version of the game someday. Right after an R-rated Star Wars movie is released of course.

Thanks to Alyssa for sending this in. Continue Reading »

Some Pretty Sweet Diablo III Fan Art

Published by under Images,Video Games

Other than all the commercials you’re probably seeing for Max Payne 3, the other game that’s getting everyone’s attention right now is Diablo III.  It’s set to be released early next week so get out your wallets.   From what I’ve heard the game seems pretty promising.

And from what I’ve seen, even more so.   I don’t remember seeing much fan art or fan obsession for the other two games.  Is that just me?   I don’t know.  Maybe three times the charm?  We’re seeing crazy trailers, cosplay, you name it.  Speaking of fan made stuff, we got some great fanart for Diablo III.

Check it out after the jump…..

Fallout: Nuka Break – The Complete Series

Published by under Video Games,Videos

A long time ago, I saw the first video in this series and thought it expertly filmed. A fan Fallout series that was actually well-made and funny? Get out of town! But then I forgot to keep checking back, and lo and behold they made an entire season that I missed.

Below I’ve posted Fallout: Nuka Break in its entirety. The episodes range from seven to sixteen minutes, and there’s only six of them, so it’s the perfect thing to pass your time at work for an hour-ish. What? Don’t tell me you actually have work to do. You wouldn’t be reading this otherwise.

Check out the series below. Anyone know when/if season two is coming? Continue Reading »

My Top Five Favorite Types of YouTube Game Content

Published by under Lists,Video Games

I’ve always been amazed at how much fun some people manage to squeeze out of a game, new or old. When given a chance it seems that users almost always create more impressive content than developers. Before the internet, and specifically YouTube, those who managed impressive in-game feats or imaginative recreations of in-game content would do so alone, without an audience.

Now however, there’s an entire web full of videos about each and every aspect of almost every single game. Some of these may simply be reviews or a “let’s play” videos, but others are much more imaginative, and in some cases, require much more talent. After the jump are my five favorite examples of user created content. Be warned, some of these videos contain NSFW language. Continue Reading »

Five Games that Are More Fun to Watch than Play

Published by under Lists,Video Games

This has been a post long-brewing with a former roommate of mine, but I finally sat down and rounded out a list we’d been discussing for a while.

When playing certain games, my friend noticed that he was having a lot of fun just simply…watching. Thinking back, I remembered something similar happening with a few titles over the years, as I went over to friend’s houses and saw them play single player without me. Sometimes it was boring, but for a few titles? It was actually blast to watch, and I actually had more fun before I took the controller.

These five games I’ve found are either a lot or a little bit more fun to play when watching. Feel free to disagree or add your own. Continue Reading »

Debate of the Day: Will You Buy Black Ops 2?

Published by under Debate,Video Games

By now I imagine you’ve heard all about Black Ops 2, how Treyarch is “reinventing” the series by taking it to the “near-future” in 2025 when wars are fought entirely by robots. But not cool, Terminator robots, just like boring drone planes and stuff that get hijacked by terrorists and turned against the US.

It’s a “bold” new direction if you think that boldness involves changing from what your series has done for years and into something that OTHER series have done for years. But that said, it is different enough where fans might view it as a “new” experience for the series.

Is it going to sway you? I hate to admit it, but it’s  just enough to get me to pick it up. What can I say? I love the future. But really, even with this being my job, if Black Ops 2 was set during the Cold War or some other similar boring locale, I probably would have skipped it. But the future? I do want to see how COD mechanics translate into the era, though I have a distinct feeling that even if the skins are all changed and the guns makes slightly different noises, it’s going to be exactly the same game. But with horses.

Have you finally exhausted your time with Call of Duty, or does the future setting give it a bit more life? What would be a change to the series to truly get you interested again, if you no longer play it?

Taking The Diablo III Release A Little Too Seriously

Published by under Images,Video Games

At this point in the game I can understand the “obsessed gamer” world.   It’s not that I’m one of these people but whenever I see someone’s room decorated Super Mario Brothers style or I see a Zelda themed birthday cake it doesn’t bother me at all.   While I may not agree with a World of Warcraft barbecue I can’t fight the fact that millions of users obsess about these titles on a daily basis.

But sometimes I think people might stretch it a little too far.    Or at least stretch it to the point where even folks like me get a little scared.   Anyone else geared up for Diablo III?   Yeah well it appears that this here fan is a little too psyched about it.  So much so his entire workspace/apartment looks like hell….literally.

Check it out after the jump….

Diablo 3 Cosplay Begins Ahead of Release

Published by under Images,Video Games

Well damn. I knew that Diablo 3 would be a hot cosplay topic with the rise of the past time over the past decade or so, but I guess if you’re going to do it, get it right the first time. These intrepid cosplays have knocked it out of the park on their very first swing with a pair of female Monk and Demon Hunter costumes that literally could not be more perfect.

The Hunter is above, and her dual crossbows are every bit as fun as they sound judging by my time in the beta. I didn’t quite understand the appeal of a weaponless, robed monk in a game all about armor and weapons, but this costume makes it look exceedingly badass.

The rest of the gallery below is an absolute must-see. Continue Reading »
