Can Someone Explain the Love for the LEGO Video Game Series to Me?

Published by Paul Tassi under Trailers, Video Games, Videos

What you see above is the first trailer for Lego’s upcoming MMO, Lego Universe. I would have laughed in your face five years ago had you told me that Lego was coming out with a game like that, and would have regarded it as a shameless marketing plug. However, for whatever reason, Lego has built itself into an extremely successful video game brand with a legion of devoted followers.

Why?

I’m not trying to be funny here, I’m really putting out an open question to fans of the series to explain just why it catches their eye. Lego Batman, Indiana Jones and Harry Potter have all been massive sellers, and it can’t be from pure nostalgia alone. I played with Legos throughout elementary school, but I’m not rushing out to buy these games. And they’re not only for little kids either, as grown adults seems to enjoy them to a unhealthy degree as well.

So what is it about them that sticks your bricks?

Unreal TV Review: 24 Season 8 Premiere

Published by Paul Tassi under Reviews, Trailers

season-8-8.jpg

Well, 24 is back with a, uh, vengeance, I suppose. I’m really not sure what other word you could really choose to describe the return of a show where explosions are as common as love triangles on Grey’s Anatomy and dead bodies pile up so fast they’re almost crowding the camera shots during filming.

24 faces the nearly impossible challenge of trying to reinvent itself every single year, and after the first four hours, I’m split as to whether or not season eight is achieving that goal thus far. But before we go into that, we have to set the scene:

President Taylor is still girl-in-chief after sending her daughter to jail for offing a federal prisoner. She’s on the verge of a massive peace deal with President Hassan of Unspecifidistan, although with terms like “UN inspectors” and “Revolutionary Guard” thrown around, it’s almost impossible that this isn’t Iran we’re talking about.

Microsoft Tries to Be Funny, and It Almost Works

Published by Paul Tassi under Movies, Trailers, Videos

I was surprised to learn that this trailer for “Office 2010″ was actually made by Microsoft’s official ad agency, but I guess I should have known judging by all the motorcycle chases and helicopters. That ain’t something you see in just any YouTube video unless it’s pulling pieces from a Michael Bay movie.

It’s trying to be a CollegeHumor style parody, but just…didn’t quite do it for me, although I did laugh at the guy’s partner being “Clippy.”

Also, it made me sad that the season premiere of 24 isn’t until NEXT week, a fact I learned when I watched our own banner ad on our site. Turns out those can actually be useful!

A Gallery That Proves Dragonball Z Cosplay Should Never Be Attempted

Published by Paul Tassi under Images, Trailers

fa8_6336_jpg.jpg

The problem with Dragonball Z cosplay, is that as seen above, even when it’s good,  it’s bad. I feel like if someone saw this gallery before sinking millions of dollars into a live action DBZ movie, they’d be a lot happier today.

It’s just one of those cartoons that can almost never translate into a cool costume, no matter how well made it may be. Still need more proof? Well, follow me on this epic journey of dress-up badness…

A Look at James Cameron’s Career as a Director Through Movie Trailers

Published by Madison under Movies, Trailers, Videos

james_cameron.jpg

I did this once with Tim Burton, so why not again with the guy who’s just dominating right now, James Cameron?

Cameron’s career is notable for two main reasons.  The first is that he simply makes enormous films on a scale much grander than most directors would ever dare to achieve; Cameron’s movies contain fully-realized worlds and alien species.  The second reason is that Cameron continuously pushes the boundaries of technology in an effort to show audiences images they’ve never seen before.

As with Avatar, it’s tough to really appreciate a Cameron movie through the trailer alone, but it still usually gives you a pretty good idea of how ambitious the movie will be.  Take a look at the trailers to all of James Cameron’s films after the jump.

Hit Me With Your Best Inception Theories

Published by Paul Tassi under Movies, Trailers, Videos

Alright, so this is the second trailer for Chris Nolan’s Inception, which despite me having close to zero clue what it’s about, is one of my most anticipated of next year because well, it’s Chris Nolan, and Memento, The Prestige and The Dark Knight are my numbers 1, 5 and 8 of all time. Insomnia was OK.

What the hell do you think is going on here? What’s this “idea” Leo is trying to steal, and how exactly do you steal it? How far in the future is this movie set? Or is it present day and someone has just invented tech to go inside people’s minds? What’s with all the weird gravity shit? I feel like I’m trying to analyze an episode of Lost or something.

So hit me with your best theories on what’s going on here, and maybe with a team effort we can come to some sort of conclusion.

Knight and Day Trailer is Better than Its Initial Pun

Published by Paul Tassi under Movies, Trailers, Videos

I have to say, for as crazy as Tom Cruise has been the past few years, I really do still like him as an actor (so long as he’s not pretending to be a Nazi who speaks perfect American English), and it’s nice to see him return to his roots in what appears to be a hybrid of his smooth talking Jerry Maguire character combined with Mission Impossible’s Ethan Hunt.

I can take or leave Cameron Diaz, but I don’t have as much of a problem with her as most people do. Knight and Day, despite its idiotic title, actually looks pretty fun, don’t you think? I still have no idea what exactly the plot of the movie is, but there’s plenty of time to figure that out later. All  I need to know now is he shoots two machine guns at a time. TWO! Has that ever even been done before?

Wiiwaa Further Proves the Wii is Just a Children’s Toy, But a Damn Good One

Published by Paul Tassi under Trailers, Video Games, Videos

I’m actually pretty impressed with this video, which shows Wiiwaa from Zoink, a new game for the Wii that lets kids feed a Wiimote to a stuffed animal and then shake him around to make his character move, jump and dance onscreen. It shows a large amount of creativity of concept, but definitely furthers my point that the Wii is just not a video game system, and I don’t really think should even be compared to PS3 and 360 because of it.

Just because something uses a screen and a controller, I don’t believe that it counts as a “video game,” at least not in the traditional sense. Is Wii Yoga really a game because you’re standing on the controller and there’s a poorly rendered 3D person doing Yoga with you onscreen? I don’t think so. And though Wiiwaa looks fun for little kids, shaking around a physical stuffed animal to make a digitial animal do things on your TV is not a “video game.” I don’t quite know what to call it, voodoo?

That being said, expect this crap to sell out like crazy next Christmas.

The Force Unleashed 2 Features Resurrection, Space Gorillas

Published by Paul Tassi under Trailers, Video Games, Videos

There were a million trailers that debuted at the Spike Video Game Awards on Saturday, but I deem this one the only one worth posting. I’ll sum up Arkham Asylum by saying the streets of Gotham are crime-filled and the Joker is quite happy about it. I’ll sum up Halo Reach by saying Spartans now have accents and different types of armor.

The Force Unleahsed 2 however, is a sequel to what I think is one of the best written gams of last year (but suffered from some control and physics problems) and the trailer has the most action of any at the award show. It opens with a dualing monologue between Vader and Yoda, and ends with young Starkiller fighting a rancor-eating space ape the size of a Star Destroyer.

I have to wonder how the hell this game is going to work, because the original Force Unleashed was a perfect bridge builder between episodes III and IV and Starkiller, you know, died, but I’ll trust the crack writing team to come up with something. Oh and TURN THIS INTO A MOVIE ALREADY.

Robin Hood Trailer: If Maximus Was a Knight

Published by Paul Tassi under Movies, Trailers

There’s very little you can actually say about this first trailer for Ridley Scott’s Robin Hood. It features swordplay, horseplay and a bit of bow and arrowing set to a rock soundtrack, but despite all that, I can in no way see anything resembling any iteration of Robin Hood in there.

I guess Scott and Crowe are going for an ultra-realistic portrayal of the folk hero, which means he’s something like William Wallace with a smaller sword and a bow on his back. I have to admit, it is nice to see Crowe back in the nitty gritty with blood and dirt on his face, and if the team that brought us Gladiator can even come close to repeated that triumph, this movie will be success in most people’s eyes. We shall see.
