Voltron Characters Get Realistic

Published by under Images,Television

volt1

I keep hearing that a Voltron movie is on the horizon, but I’m half convinced they just converted it into Pacific Rim and called it a day. But perhaps a real movie will come someday, and when it does it may look something like this.

This series is from Josh Burns who takes the characters of Voltron from rudimentary cartoons into animated, realistic works of art. He’s not exactly Dave Rapoza, but is pretty damn good in his own right. All the major players are casted, and now I see that Jack Black is probably going to end up in this movie…sigh.

Game of Thrones: The Gathering

Published by under Images,Television

I remember when it used to be an internet thing to make Magic cards out of stuff that wasn’t magic related. Turns out it’s STILL a thing judging by these Game of Thrones themed cards that I’ve just found via Geekologie.

There are quite a lot in the set, and nearly all the major players of the show have their own card. Looking over them, these weren’t just slapped together. The best part is reading the abilities which actually make quite a lot of sense given the characters.

I particularly like Littlefinger’s “Extort” abillity (though I’m not sure why Jaime also has it), and of course Dany gets upgradeable three dragon creature tokens.

Game of Thrones Review: The Rains of Castamere

Published by under Reviews,Television

rains1

There’s a reason HBO took a week off of Game of Thrones last Sunday over Memorial Day weekend. They didn’t do it last year, and suffered a drop in the ratings as people were out and about vacationing rather than sitting in their homes watching TV.

They sure as hell didn’t want anyone to miss this episode this year.

The Rains of Castamere came pouring down for what very well may be the most shocking episode in the show’s history. And considering how many gasp moments there have been so far, that’s really saying something. Continue Reading »

Cosplay of the Day: Margaery, The Little Rose

Published by under Comics,Images,Television

tyrell

I’ve finished the Game of Thrones books now and (no spoilers) I’m still not sure if Margaery is a master manipulator or just a pawn used by her family. Perhaps that will be made clear later, but at present, it’s hard to tell.

The cosplay above is from Kapalaka, and I’d classify it as relative “easy.” It’s not a knock, but I think most of this being fantastic is the fact that this girl is a dead ringer for actress Natalie Dormer, at least in this picture. The costume itself isn’t quite as ornate as her actual outfits on the show.

She should be friends with the Cersei Lannister, along with Petyr Baelish.

The Problem With the New Arrested Development

Published by under Editorials,Television

arrested1

As a master of self-control, I’m only seven episodes into season four of Arrested Development, which premiered on Netflix a few days ago. I could have splurged and devoured them all down in one go, but when you haven’t had a scoop of ice cream in five years, you don’t want to go wolfing down an entire carton as soon as it’s set out in front of you.

I’m wading through the show right now, attempting to dodge internet spoilers. I’ve heard mixed things about the show ranging from “good” to “disappointing,” but I don’t believe that latter classification is fair.

We need to keep in mind that for all intents and purposes, Arrested Development is one of the best TV shows ever made, if not the best. To resurrect it after three seasons of near perfection was almost a death wish in many ways, as it almost couldn’t NOT be disappointing to some degree. Jesus Christ himself could come back alongside the episodes and some people would still watch and say “meh.”

When a show was as good as Arrested was, and there’s SO much pressure to make sure it’s the same level of brilliance, it’s nearly impossible for the new show to actually replicate the exact quality of the old. Continue Reading »

Ten Incredibly Geeky Moments from Supernatural

Published by under Lists,Television

supernatural0

Supernatural has reigned for eight seasons as arguably the most underrated and consistently entertaining show on television. Keeping any fantasy/sci-fi/horror series on the air for more than a couple of years seems to take a minor miracle, but this one has been going on strong for nearly a decade with almost zero mainstream buzz, and it has seldom disappointed in that time. To put that in further perspective, I typically acknowledge Buffy the Vampire Slayer as the be-all-end-all of geek-flavored television series.  Well, that one lasted for seven seasons and even the most hardcore of fans will acknowledge that the show was falling apart for the last two and needed to end.

A while back I was watching Defiance and this amazing piece of music came on. As the singer croaked out the melody, I recognized the whiskey and cigarette-ravaged voice as belonging to an aged-but-immortal Bob Dylan. What the hell does this have to do with Supernatural? Well, it put the idea in my head that while most artists run out of steam at some point, others just keep going on and on without losing a step. I realized I was a fool to have ignored the fact that Bob freaking Dylan had a new album out. About a week later I viewed the season 8 finale of Supernatural, which inspired this article. It not only provided one of the most insanely nerdy moments I’ve ever seen on television, but the final shot of the season was so utterly epic I was kicking myself for thinking this should be the last season and that they should quit while they’re ahead. Anus Tart: Five Great Guest Stars (and Three Killer Cameos) From Arrested Development Season 4

tumblr_mngnd1EpCk1r893n6o1_500

We all need “a new start” from time to time, which makes it even more beautiful that this wonderful show got one. I mean, really, are there any words to capture how wonderful this new season of Arrested Development is? Not just in execution, but in the very idea that it exists? Who would have thought Netflix would have swooped in and saved the day, like some greased up Carl Weathers? Surely not I, yet, it has. And though it may take an episode or two to get back into the manic rhythm of the Bluth family, once you are there, it is just like riding a jetpack. Once you do it once, you pretty much never forget how it works. And as an added bonus, the new season of Arrested Development has some AMAZING guest stars and cameos (which has pretty much been a constant for this amazing show since it launched).

As you can probably tell from the title of this article, there will be some spoilers here, but only for the first half of the season, and I will keep the best jokes from being spoiled, do don’t worry. I am six episodes deep, trying my damnedest to stretch the whole season out, but finding myself incapable of doing so. Also, another thing you can probably tell from this opening is that there will be a lot of Arrested Development inside jokes here, so if something doesn’t make sense to you, take comfort in knowing it will make sense to someone else. Plus, how is it SUPPOSED to make sense to someone who is wearing a seventy dollar suit, when I am wearing a sixty two hundred dollar suit. COME ON??!!!

Game of Thrones Characters in Decades Past

Published by under Images,Television

tumblr_mmwhrdu4RJ1rihymso1_500

Mike Wrobel is a French artist based in Tokyo with a wicked eye for graphic design. He recently drew my attention with this series of Game of Thrones characters shifted into our universe 20-30 years ago.

There’s grunge Jon Snow, Miami Vice Jaime, ferret holding Dany and wannabe thug Joffrey above. Wrobel is great at hypercolor portraits like these, and I really hope he continues the series with more characters from the universe.

Spartacus Draws Final Breath In War of the Damned

Published by under Editorials,Television

war1

As told in the tongue of the show itself.

My fast is broken. For too long, eyes have been far removed from tales of Spartacus and gladiator brothers. My mind was diverted with thoughts Doctors traveling space and time, or Vikings pillaging lands far from sight. But at last my gaze returns to behold the glory of final bloody contest as Spartacus removes himself from our televisions once and for all. So remove cock from ass and join me in celebrating his final victory as I move thoughts from mind to words on page.

Spartacus has always appeared to be a show absent reason and sense, embracing spectacle of blood and sex like none before it. The latter is true, the former a grievous lie. Despite slavish devotion to carnage and mayhem, the show and the man are not the brute they appear.

In seasons past, Spartacus was gladiator upon sand, rebel upon streets. Now here he stands general upon battlefield, with Rome trembling before him. Actor Liam McIntyre acquired job none would envy. Replacing beloved predecessor Andy Whitfield, struck from earth too soon by the sinister grip of cancer. But McIntyre rises to the occasion, bringing glory to character and program alike. No replacement of lead has ever stood so successful, spanning all of history. Continue Reading »

You Should Netflix This Now: Slings and Arrows

Published by under Television

It’s getting to the point where there’s too much entertainment readily available.  I’m sure most of you are old enough to remember that at one point, if you wanted to watch a specific episode of The X-Files, you had to be lucky enough to have taped it, or know someone who’d taped it, or catch a re-run on TV.  Even 10 years ago, you’d still have to go out and hunt down an actual DVD, or try to download the episode from an extremely sketchy file sharing program.

Now, you can name pretty much any movie or episode of TV, and I can have it playing on my computer inside 90 seconds.  So how do you sort through the wheat and the chaff?  Easy.  Same as it ever was.  Personal recommendations and word of mouth.  No one needs to talk up or talk down something like Scrubs.  It’s there, it’s incredibly well known, there are a modest range of opinions on its quality.  But there are other shows you can watch right now, shows you’d never hear about in the mainstream media, shows like Slings and Arrows.

First Season Post-Mortem: Bates Motel

Published by under Television

bates_motel-64516584

One of the benefits to being as old as I am is that I’ve seen more than enough of my share of film and television to make me truly cynical about the entire storytelling process. There really is nothing ‘new’ under the sun; there are just retreads, rehashes, reboots, and regurgitation.

Take A&E’s Bates Motel, for example.

Bates Motel burst out of its starting gate with an impressive pilot episode – one that looked like David Lynch had finally returned to the boob tube to weave another season of the memorable but inevitably confusing Twin Peaks. Audiences were understandably swept away with this tale of ‘The Young Norman Bates Chronicles,’ made fittingly complete with fresh-faced Freddie Highmore playing a believable psycho-in-training as the certifiably affable Norman.

Back, in top form, was the row of motel rooms along a quiet highway.

Back was the signature creepy house on the hill.

Back was Mama Bates – sans all the taxidermy – played with a lovable ‘what’s wrong with her?’ vibe by Vera Farmiga. Continue Reading »
