Tim Doyle’s Famous TV Locations

Published by under Images,Television

DoctorWho

Tim Doyle is an exceptionally talented artist whose latest series spans a whole host of popular TV franchises. He’s tried to draw iconic locations for an exhibition at Spoke Art, and the results are sublime. Yes, sublime.

He features a ton of my (our) favorite shows from Doctor Who (above) to Firefly to Arrested Development to The Simpsons to Twin Peaks. He even got Castle Greyskull in there too.

Check out all the ones I could find from the collection below. I’m currently on the hunt for more. Continue Reading »

Five Kinds of People that Can’t Possibly Exist in Real Life

Published by under Editorials,Lists,Television

Ah, it feels good to rest my hands on a full-size keyboard again.

For the six or so readers who may have noticed my absence, I’ve spent the last couple weeks recovering from a much-needed round of knee surgery. ACL reconstructive + meniscus repair, to be precise. The operation was no picnic, but the real agony started the next day, when I found myself largely immobilized from the waist down. (A fully grown TJ is not meant for captivity, you see—even with Wi-fi and basic cable.)

When I got bored of hazily wading through Fresh Prince  reruns, Adult Swim cartoons,  and alien-based History Channel documentaries (i.e., roughly three days), I reached for my laptop; writing is one of my favorite distractions. But while some prescription drugs might enhance the creative process, I can assure you Percocet isn’t one of them. The foggy pitches I sent Paul during that first week left something to be desired.

Community’s Valloween Cards

Published by under Images,Television

Community 6

Community is trying to make the best of their show being shoved into 2013. It’s forced them to do silly things like air their Halloween episode on Valentine’s Day, and do #Valloween was born. Oops, hashtags don’t work on Unreality.

Reader Mandy Maxwell sent me these NBC made Valloween cards which combine costumes from past and present Community episodes with sexy Valentine’s sentiments. Oh Donald Glover, you’re so dreamy.

I Smell a Disney Channel Show

Published by under Images,Television

I saw this on Facebook of all places, but as it had the intended effect of making me feel ancient, I figured I’d try to plague you with the same feeling.

Has it really been nine years since Friends went off the air in 2004? Shit, has it really been nine years since I graduated HIGH SCHOOL in 2004? That’s probably the thing that makes me feel the oldest.

But seriously, with the way NBC is going these days, I wouldn’t be half surprised for them to attempt a “Sons of Friends” sitcom at some point as a desperate ploy for something, anything that would give them some ratings. Do No Harm and Deception just aren’t cutting it.

How Kai the Hatchet Hitchhiker Proves We Would Embrace a Real Life Dexter

kai

Update: I’ve been hearing about this story for two weeks now, and never once did I figure out that the guy Kai attacked didn’t actually die. I just heard “hatchet to the head,” and drew my own conclusions. I suppose that negates nearly all of what I say here in this post, but feel free to read anyway.

By now many of you have heard about the story of Kai, the hitchhiker made famous on YouTube after an act of heroism. You can watch the famed video here, or I’ll just briefly explain the scenario.

Kai is a homeless (or home-free, as he says) hitchhiker who talks like every stoned surfer you’ve ever imagined times twenty. His laid back life had him catch a ride from a stranger one day who happened to be rather crazy. The man said he was Jesus, and to demonstrate that, rammed his car into the first pedestrian he could find.

Afterward, he jumped out of the car and proceeded to attack two women. Kai thought this was very un-chill of him, so he proceed to run up behind the guy and BEAT HIM TO DEATH WITH A HATCHET.

The local news showed up to interview him, and the rest is history. This was like if Antoine Dodson had shot the guy in the face who trying to rape his sister. A refresher if you don’t get that reference.

Much like everyone, I laughed at Kai’s odd personality and applauded him for stepping in to do what he could. It wasn’t until I saw that Jimmy Kimmel tracked him down and brought him onto  his show for a bizarre interview that I started thinking about the deeper implications of Kai. Continue Reading »

SHIELD is Coming

Published by under Images,Television

shield

It’s rare that I’m more excited for an upcoming new show than I am most movies, but I’m desperately curiously to see how Joss Whedon’s SHIELD is going to go. With his newfound clout, might he be able to have a show on air that doesn’t get canceled too soon? This is on ABC, not Fox, so I’d say his chances are above average.

The picture above is one of the only ones I’ve seen from the set, as nearly everyone else is being kept under wraps for the time being. The pilot is done being filmed, and if ABC greenlights it, there will be a lot more to come. This isn’t Wonder Woman, however, and there would be a huge uproar if someone this never made it to air.

I know Whedon won’t end up doing the day to day of the show, but even if he’s involved in shaping it, I have high hopes. What about you?

The Signs of the Simpsons

Published by under Images,Television

Simpsons Signs 8

A decade and a half before Arrested Development was on the air, The Simpsons was the king of hiding jokes. The show might be old news at this point in it’s 67th season, but that doesn’t mean it hasn’t packed in a lot of funny over the years.

Via PleatedJeans comes this collection of screencaps of a devoted fan who hunted through episodes to find subtle jokes that probably only were on the screen for a second or two. There have been dozens of these over the years, but here’s 25 to get you started.

My favorite of all time was when the Simpsons went to Canada and saw “Canadian Graffiti.” Check out the rest of these below: Continue Reading »

Woodbury’s Unlikeliest Resident

Published by under Images,Television

heisenberg

There’s been some debate about whether or not Walter White was in fact killed off during The Walking Dead this week. During the Governor’s list of names, many thought they heard him say that “Heisenberg” was among the deceased.

With how much of a badass WW is, it’s no stretch to think that he could have survived the zombie apocalypse. He also would have likely kept his pseudonym as the “badass” side of him would be the one he needed to embrace to carry on.

Or the Governor said “Eisenberg” and he was talking about this guy. In any case, it wouldn’t be the first time the Walking Dead has slid a subtle Breaking Bad reference into the show. Remember Merle’s drug bag?

Johnny Bravo Helps You Pick Up Chicks

Published by under Television,Videos

The words “Johnny Bravo” probably haven’t even crossed my mind in about five years, but that doesn’t mean my head isn’t instantly filled with his catchphrases again the moment I saw this video.

It’s a compilation of a whole bunch of times that Bravo tried to pick up girls on the show, which is like, every episode. I never really realized what a strange show this was, as it was aimed at kids who really had no interest in the opposite sex, at least for a few more years, so a lot of this probably went over their heads. It’s just some guy with goofy hair saying funny things.

Perhaps subconsciously, this is why many guys grew up to be obnoxious douchebags with gelled hair and bulging muscles. Damn you Johnny, you spawned Jersey Shore and none of us even realized it.

The Walking Dead Review: “The Suicide King”

Published by under Reviews,Television

suicide king1

For one reason or another, The Walking Dead has never fallen into my weekly review pile. Usually it overlaps with other shows I’d rather be covering, but now since Breaking Bad is a memory (for the time being) and Game of Thrones is still a ways off, I thought I’d try this out to gauge interest.

This will be my first official Walking Dead review/recap/discussion/whatever you want to call it. I’ve taken some flack for my review formats before of shows, but I’m past caring. I’ll talk about what happened on the show, give my own thoughts and predictions, and ask you for yours. With ten million viewers a night, I think at least some of you might enjoy that around these parts.

I’ll get this out of the way now, as I’ve never done a real review of the show yet, I don’t think discussion of the comic is relevant. Ever. I just don’t. Either it’s going to give away an important  plot point that could happen in the future, or it will just be confusing as the show and the comic continue to grow farther and farther apart. I’ve actually kept up with the comics to the approximate equivalent of where the show is, and though some major plot points are shared, it’s very, very different, and we’re now getting to the point where it’s borderline impossible to predict anything using the comic, so why bother? And in the off chance that it does end up being a spoiler? Well, that’s bad too.

With that said, let’s begin. Continue Reading »

The Best Cartoon Not Enough Of You Are Watching: How Regular Show Is Anything But Regular

Published by under Editorials,Television

regs

Though I have made my love for Adventure Time, as well as a few other cartoons, quite clear to the readers of this site, there is one show that has been curiously missing from these articles, and I am ready to change that all right now. Though it took some time for me to warm up to it, Regular Show (which follows Adventure Time on Mondays at 8 on Cartoon Network) is a divine dosage of retro love. On top of that, the episodes go from whimsical to bat shit insane with little warning, which is also one of the reasons it’s awesome. In one scene, they might be buying a sandwich, and in the next scene they could be fighting a bunch of guys with mullets and jean shorts while generic metal music shreds in the background. Silly and fantastic, all at once, The Regular Show needs more love, and that is why I am telling you all about it. Because, tonight, at 8, you are watching it. Seriously, you are. You’ll thank me tomorrow. Which you can do here.

My love for Regular Show came about in a strange way. Though many a friend had told me I would love, I discovered it while I was couch bound one day due to  heavy drug use a cold. I sat and watched a block of episodes, and my mind was blown. It is a show that pretty much gives props to all the things I love. Food, movies, video games, monsters, old school technology, and being a slacker. And all that served with a great deal of surrealism , too.Like the time Mordecai and Rigby had to judge a pie eating contest, and one of the pies became sentient and began eating the contestants. Wait, I am getting ahead of myself. Continue Reading »
