Star Trek Teams Up with Doctor Who

Published by under Images,Television

I pulled this image off io9′s sci-fi March Madness bracket where they have different famed science fiction franchises go head to head. I swear, people make a bracket for anything this month.

While I have no stake in who wins, (the final four is Doctor Who, Star Trek: TNG, X-Files and the original Star Trek), I did rather like the art they chose for the lead image.

It’s from DeviantArtist Summerset, and shows what it might look like if the Star Trek crew teamed up with the Doctor to fight common enemies. It would be great if this crossover happened in real life, but I can’t really see that occurring with Star Trek all wrapped up in reboot movie mode. Still, cool to see though.

The Voice of Spider-Man Reads His Own Memes

Published by under Television,Videos

I’ve assembled collections of Spider-Man memes before, as I think they’re some of my favorite type  in existence. Turns out, I’m not the only one. Voice actor Josh Keaton, who did the voice of Spidey in Spectacular Spider-Man, decided to do a voiceover reading some of the best ones.

They take on a new dimension when read by Spider-Man himself. Hearing “This is bullshit, you can’t ground Spider-Man!” in his actual voice was pretty damn amazing.

It’s weird though. Unlike Kevin Conroy’s Batman, I don’t associate one particular voice with Spider-Man. Not this guy, not Tobey Maguire, not Andrew Garfield, and not the other voice actors for the various animated shows. Keaton is pretty good though.

A Guy and His Girlfriend in Ten Different Animation Styles

Girlfriend Art 5

When I got engaged I made a little storybook for my fiancee that chronicled our life together, complete with pictures. It wasn’t the greatest, but it was sweet, and she really liked it.

Unfortunately, it could have been even better if I had some artistic talent, like this redditor whose name is so long I can’t even spell it. His project was to draw him and his girlfriend in a bunch of different animation styles. There’s The Simpsons, Family Guy, South Park, Gorillaz (above), Adventure Time and more.

It’s a neat little project, and you should check out the full gallery below: Continue Reading »

The Game of Thrones Cast as Cats

Published by under Images,Television

snipe

Well, that was exactly what it sounded like, wasn’t it? You really can’t go wrong with Game of Thrones and cats, two of the things people care most passionately about in life.

I think my favorites have to be Tyrion kitten and Sam fat cat. I think Dany probably should have been a gold cat with blue eyes, but that’s close enough I suppose.

There has to be a dog one of these right? I Googled it, but all I’m getting are endless pictures of Direwolves and The Hound.

A Gallery of Artistic Tribute to Tyrion Lannister

Published by under Images,Television

Tyrion Lannister Art 2

Game of Thrones is less than a week away, and as such, you’ll be seeing a ton of related posts about it here. I thought I’d do my part for hype generation by assembling a rather cool gallery of Game of Thrones fan art for you to enjoy.

Obviously, the field was wide open in terms of subject matter, so I thought I’d focus on one fan favorite character in particular. I went with Tyrion Lannister, because 80% of Daenerys’ art prominently featured boobs.

Tyrion has no such assets, but that doesn’t mean his art isn’t incredibly good. These devoted fans I found over at DeviantArt, and you can check out the full gallery below: Continue Reading »

Cobra Commander Turns to Kickstarter

Published by under Television,Videos

If Kickstarter can fund an entire feature length movie, who’s to say what it can’t fund? Well, one recognizable figure is now taking to the site to ask for some crowdfunding of his own.

That would be GI Joe’s Cobra Commander, who is looking for somewhere between 23 and 93 million dollars to help build a new Cobra Island. The original has been destroyed by the Joes (more than once, probably), and he’s looking to build a new state-of-the-art facility that will assuredly NOT get knocked down in another week.

Watch the video to see what rewards Cobra is offering for donations. Only $50,000 to get the Baroness to flash you!

The Walking Dead Review: “The Sorrowful Life”

Published by under Reviews,Television

dead sorrowful

After two mediocre weeks, The Walking Dead shambled back to life with a powerful penultimate episode. It was probably the best outing of the season outside of “Clear,” and it should come as no surprise that both episodes were written by the same man, Scott M. Gimple. I’m not sure who he is exactly other than a periodic scripter on the show, but damn does he know how to inject emotion into his scripts.

This week was all about the redemption of Merle Dixon, a character we’ve loved to loathe since his appearance in season one. He skipped out all of next season but was back with a vengeance this year, more of a bastard than ever.

But this was the best look inside his mind we’ve had so far, perhaps the only look, really. Merle is usually a closed book of snark and rage, but only now were we given a chance to see what really makes him tick. Continue Reading »

A Trip to Utopia and Back

Published by under Reviews,Television

Utopia … look away now.

After Benny’s write-up of Black Mirror, a bunch of recommendations came in for similar shows she, and the rest of us, should experiment with if we liked that sort of thing.

One name kept coming up, “Utopia,” and in many ways it is indeed quite similar to Black Mirror. It’s British, six episodes long, has a sci-fi bent to it and is even on the same network, Channel 4. I decided to hunt it down for myself and have recently finished the first series, and have heard news that a second is on the way.

The premise is quite gripping right off the bat. There’s a graphic novel, Utopia, written by a genius-turned-madman who killed himself shortly after. The bizarre images contained within have drawn conspiracy theorists to analyze what it all means, and a group of them assemble when a member of a Utopia chatroom claims he has the unreleased second edition of the book. Fun With Game of Thrones Vectors

Published by under Images,Television

Game of Thrones Vectors 1

I’m currently in mourning now that I’ve learned that because of an expected trip home, I’m actually going to miss the Game of Thrones premiere. Oh, the humanity! Why don’t my parents have HBO?

In any case, I’ll have to be content with the Walking Dead finale with the GoT premiere the next day as I dodge spoilers like the plague.

Keeping good on my word, here’s yet another bit of Game of Thrones artwork as we approach the premiere. It’s a series of vector drawings from Robert Ball who is really quite good at that sort of thing. Put them all together and they kind of look like a Beatles album cover.

See the rest of them below: Continue Reading »

Vulture’s Downton and Girls Paper Dolls

Published by under Images,Television

Vulture Dolls 2

Vulture cooks up some weird ideas sometimes, and this is certainly no exception. They commissioned artist Kyle Hilton to come up with a series of printable paper dolls for both Downton Abbey, and more recently, the guys of Girls. Yes, paper dolls.

Though you can print them, it’s just as funny to just look at them onscreen. The Downton ones cover most of the fan favorite cast members, while the Girls ones are most of the main males from the show, including Adam, who naturally does not have a cut-out shirt.

You can check out the rest of the dolls below, and click to make them a lot bigger. Continue Reading »

The Real A-Team: My Favorite Alpha Males From Television

Published by under Lists,Television

bauer

You can keep your forensic experts, CBS. Science & fibers & DNA, oh my! Me? Why, I’ve always been a fan of the more hard-boiled, dime-novel protagonists & antagonists, myself. I grew up on the prose of Mickey Spillane and Raymond Chandler. In the dark corners they created, a guy had to know how to use his fists at a young age. Plus, he had to know how to talk in order to just hold his place in society. In fact, give me a mook with an attitude and a gun, and I’m far more inclined to tune in from week-to-week if for no better reason just to see what he’s up to, who he’s after, and how he does ‘em in.

Yes, I know that makes me a bit of a critical cretin so far as some are concerned, but I like what I like, and I’ll never – NEVER – apologize for it. Mine is the world where John McClane would feel right at home killing the nastiest among us, where Conan would rush headfirst into combat with his blade already drawn, and where Dirty Harry would ask you if you felt lucky before he called you a ‘punk.’

Instead of apologizing, I’ll share a few of my TV favorites and encourage you to do the same in the chatbacks. Continue Reading »
