Maurice Sendak’s Avengers on Parade

Published by under Images,Movies

From reader Mandy and artist Agarthan comes a combination of the two biggest stories of last week. Avengers broke box office records, and Maurice Sendak, creator of Where the Wild Things Are, passed away.

You wouldn’t think there’d be any overlap between the two, but I’ll be damned if this isn’t a really cool attempt at  merging the franchises. The Avengers have never been more adorable, and I think scepter-holding Stark and SHIELD banner Black Widow are my favorite.

Alright Agarthan, think you have a whole book in you? I’d totally love to see this little brigade have other adventures.

I Hope He Got Likeness Royalties

Published by under Images,Movies

Uh, wow. No, seriously. I’ve seen “oh this guy kind of looks like this cartoon” pictures before, but there’s no way on earth that this guy wasn’t the actual character model for Carl from Up. You can dress up any fat asian kid like Russell, but the facial features on this guy are IDENTICAL from his mouth to nose to overall head shape. Throw on a bow tie and whiten up that hair a bit, and it’d literally be perfect.

Seriously, I’ve never been hypnotized by an old man before, but this is just fascinating. Could he be one of the Pixar animator’s fathers or something? That would be the only explanation that would make sense to me.

Good Guy Loki

Published by under Images,Movies

How good of an actor is The Avengers’ Tom Hiddleston? So good that in the film you wouldn’t have any idea at all that he’s actually an incredibly nice guy in real life. He’s one of the most dastardly movie villains in years, but according to everyone, he’s a real sweetheart when he’s not locked into “Loki mode.”

That’s probably best demonstrated by this picture where he poses with a young fan, or cast member’s child, or Chris Evans transformed into a toddler. It’s one of those classic behind the scenes shot that will be compiled in a cool book someday when the special edition DVD is released. Are people still making DVDs?

1994′s Fantastic Four – Superhero Movies Have Come a Long Way

Published by under Movies,Videos

Perhaps it will hurt my geek cred to admit it, but I had no idea that a 1994 version of the Fantastic Four ever existed. It’s roughly in the same class as the old  Punisher, Spider-man and Captain America movies, but wow, it’s pretty bad. It feels like its more out of the ’60s than the ’90s.

It’s kind of insane to see  the transformation from this (actually unreleased) movie to the one a decade later in 2005. Sure, the budget was larger, but it seems EONS apart. The jump probably won’t be as severe by 2015, but still, you have to wonder what the big budget action movies of the near future are going to look like as technology continues to evolve.

Do actual copies of this exist anywhere? I kind of want to watch the whole thing.

Five Movies that Could Break The Avenger’s Opening Weekend Record

Published by under Lists,Movies

Unless you’ve been living in a cave this week, you’ve probably already seen The Avengers. Even if you were living in a cave, it was still probably showing The Avengers inside. How else does a movie get to $207M in box office receipts?

It’s a record setting total that nearly everyone thought impossible, but now thoughts turn to the future and what the NEXT film could be to surpass that figure. There are only a handful of franchises that even have a prayer of coming close, and I’ve picked five films I believe could top it upon release.

As you may realize when you view the list, the films start from the most realistic possibilities, and slowly regress to completely fictional movies that will never exist. But if they did? You can bet they’d dethrone the reigning champ. Continue Reading »

Memorable Moments in Movies: Jimmy Chitwood Says “I’ll Make It” in Hoosiers

Published by under Columns,Movies

I’ll start off this post by saying “yes, this is clearly a spoiler” so don’t even bother clicking play if you haven’t seen the movie Hoosiers.   If you have then I guarantee you that this will give you goosebumps.   I mean anyone that’s ever played a sport can appreciate a scene like this.

I swear when he says “I’ll make it” I nearly get tears in my eyes every single time.   And the fact that coach Dale changes the entire play because he knows Chitwood’s gonna sink the shot is amazing.   What a great scene.

Before They Were Avengers

Published by under Images,Movies

Behold, your mighty Avengers, years before they assembled into anything resembling a fighting superhero force. Most of these are high school era photos of the actors, and it shows that even the awkward looking can go on to become stars. Except for Chris Evans and Liam Chris Hemsworth who were always superhotties.

Robert Downey Jr. and Mark Ruffalo look like co-captains of the chess team, while Scarlett Johansson appears to share most of the same DNA as Jessica Alba. Seriously, I think they were part of the same genetic experiment to create the perfect woman.

Renner. Wicked. Mullet. That is all.

Six Brutal Death Scenes From Non-Horror Movies

Published by under Lists,Movies

More often than not, gory and graphic death scenes are reserved for horror movies. But every now and then, a surprisingly brutal death scene will pop up in the middle of a drama or comedy, completely shocking the audience. There is something that just seems more taboo about seeing a death scene in a film that is not a horror, because, subconsciously, you are not prepared for it.

Seeing someone get their throat slashed in a horror movie is no longer shocking, but seeing someone have their throat slashed out of the blue in a comedy really is. Contextually speaking, death tends to be the most shocking when it is least expected. Here are six examples where death either caught me completely off guard, or awed me at how at home it felt outside of the confines of a horror film.

Movie Recommendation of the Week: Once Bitten

Published by under Columns,Movies

OK here’s the deal with this recommendation.   It’s easily one of the worst movies of all time.  However,  I know there’s a contingent out there who once thought that Jim Carrey was the funniest guy in the world.   And during that time that you loved him, you wanted to see every movie he was in before he was famous.   That’s where Once Bitten comes in.

It’s one of the dumbest movies in history about a female vampire who needs to survive by turning a male virgin into a vampire.   While the entire movie can be void if she just bit some little kid, she decides to go after Carrey’s character.   And oddly enough she bits on the groin and not the neck.

Carrey has two ridiculously lame friends.  The female vampire is played by Lauren Hutton and her “butler” is Cleavon Little, the black guy in Blazing Saddles.   Again, this is a horrible movie but you see some vintage Carrey in it.   He does a funny Robert De Niro impression and displays some funny dance moves.  If not for these moments I wouldn’t have brought the movie up.

Anyway, watch at your own risk.  Trailer after the jump….

Diplomacy Works

Alright, I post a few cool pictures a day here on the site, but this might be a contender for photo of the year. At long last, two mortal enemies reconciling, proving that diplomacy is the way forward, even across intergalactic rivalries.

I’m not sure what event Arnold was at that required him to make piece with his longtime foe the Predator, but I’m really glad he showed up and we got to immortalize this moment forever.

Can we can an Alien in there for a three way hug?
