Today I thought I’d spare you from the stuff I usually rant about and share this delightful short recommended on a hot tip from a fellow nerd.
That’s right, I’ve got a friend IRL. Pass the Miss Popularity sash over this way, please.
It cleverly explores a well-worn and well-loved yet equally derided trope that’s permeated our culture since at least 1980, when Zooey Deschanel was born. Though if we’re being real sticklers, the original manic pixie dream girl (Kirsten Dunst) was born in 1982.
Question: if the woman responsible for the term “manic pixie dream girl” was born two years after Zooey, does the resulting paradox still teach broodingly soulful young men to embrace life and its infinite mysteries and adventures?
Joss Whedon gave the short even more nerd cachet when he shared it on twitter yesterday, tweeting: “Well, this is just right. #whimsy #thankskaren.”
Yes, thanks Karen. And thanks to my friend Krystal.
