I love multiplayer games. Gain Ground (kind of), Metal Slug, Baulder's gate and champions of Norrath, GoW, Mario Kart, Golden Eye, and yes Borderlands 2 was fun as multiplayer...

Hell I remember when we used to have games parties and we would play fighting games for hours, passing the controller from loser to loser. It was always fun, challenging, and thrilling to try an maintain the winning streak. Now, I'll be honest, I've only ever played Street Fighter x Tekken online. It's great to play against a variety of people and to always have someone to play but it's not the same.

@grandwazoo - i think the point was about games you could play while hanging out with your friends and have a blast. how long has it been since most of you have played a 4-player game with your buddies on the couch next to you?

that's what i miss the most; my friends and i used to play N64 (goldeneye, perfect dark, mario kart, mario part 1 & 2, WCW/NWO, WWE No Mercy, etc) until 4am or later almost every night during the summers between my senior year of high school and the start of my junior year of college. those are still some of my happiest memories (the real world hadn't caught up to any of us at that point yet!).

playing 2 player co-op on some Xbox games is the closest comparison in recent times. i've stomped through co-op on Legendary on all 4 Halo games + Reach and ODST, some of them multiple times with different friends. we've also played some of the LEGO, Resident Evil, Gears of War, and a few other good co-op series too.

oh, and anyone remember when 4-player Rock Band was still a thing? can't recall the last time i did that.

It's kind of unfair to call these games "true multiplayer games," considering that every single game would have internet-based multiplayer if the technology was around at the time.

No mention of the 1 shooter that changed how shooters would be played forever on console? The one that defined the multiplayer experience like no other?

GoldenEye or GTFO.

I believe this is a pretty personal list. Not to say mine isn't, but I can't say I ever tuned engines with my friends in GT1 or have even heard of Lotus Turbo 2. I just don't think most of these are universal things I necessarily forgot, while I will admit titles like Mario Kart and Goldeneye probably were.

I would have to put Halo 1 up top on xbox. I have a friend who we actually gathered total of 16 people, 4 xbox's, hundreds of ft. of ethernet cable, 4 big TV's in his parents 2 story house and had all night halo capture the flag games. since Halo 1 on xbox was not on xbox live so the only way to have true matches was to LAN it.

Also for other posters....no Goldeneye and Mario Kart? For shame...

Jesus Christ kids:
- first lan on starcraft experiencing the zerg rush?
- first dual play kicking ass on golden axe?
- First sleepless night playing Duke Nukem 3D dropping laser mines or stomping your friends
- First hours of Warhammer 40.000 building a huge Necron army?
- Goldeneye: I mean GOLDEN "frickin" EYE for heaven's sake
- LOTUS TURBO 2?
- you and your friends fine tuning a GTO twin turbo in Gran Turismo 1
- Getting a 4x kill streak on your friend in Unreal or Quake 3 arena?

There are so much more HUGE multi player experience
