I don’t know how anyone can watch this and think it’s a good movie.

I don’t know what the director meant for it to be; I thought it was just an incredibly stupid film that’s not even aware of what a terrible message it sends out.
Was the relationship between Hushpuppy and her father meant to be symbolic, or realistic, or something? Like, “we’re still family, and I’ll be there for you in the end, even though you continuously subject me to emotional abuse, deny me access to hygienic living conditions and a proper education”?
And the whole “the government is EVIL and everything they do is EVIL and they only do it to ruin good people like us” vibe. How dare they remove people, many of them young children, from an uninhabitable disaster zone?! How dare they offer the father a life-saving operation?! How dare they have hospitals?! How dare they make people wear clean clothes, have regular meals, and proper sanitation?! The monsters! Really.

The “high” point though was the stock footage of crumbling glaciers; genuinely didn’t expect to see that.

Even on the movies I’ve made for fun I’ve noticed how much I can improve or ruin a piece of acting by actions taken in the edit room.

So I guess my point would be that the performance is the performance, and the actor tends to get credit regardless of whether or not they “deserve” it.

Then again, it does sometimes seem like people want to nominate people like this girl just to… prove a point or something. Your “best in age group” line has a ring of truth to it.

I haven’t seen this movie in particular, so I’m just speaking generally.
