I've always felt dark and gritty was the wrong way to go for Superman cinema. I'd love to see them set Superman in the 1930s, give it a lot of bright color and "gee whiz, aw shucks" kind of sentiment. Make it about optimism and wonder, and not about Superman as the conflicted God.

@ Davey J - I completely agree. If I remember correctly it drops the literal found footage style very early on - the first time they show the alien inside his trailer I think. Granted it's been a long time since I saw it but that always stuck with me. It's like how Modern Family uses the "documentary" style when it's convenient but more times than I can count you get a straight reverse shot from one camera to see that camera wasn't there at all. People need to call it what it is - shot with shaky handheld camera using quick zooms to give a more realistic impression, but documentary/found footage this are not. How could Blomkamp get it so wrong when paranormal activity (like or hate it) nails the style perfectly?

I am gonna co-sign with Piratey on Drag me to Hell. That was a fun movie. Thoroughly, enjoyable.

Superman is never going to be good. I think of that movie Angus distills exactly what is missing from the character. If you have seen it you know what I am talking about, if you have not, just look it up at IMDB.

Lone Ranger and Ender's Game are on my list of hoping to not disappoint.

I'm not hopeful for Man of Steel. Superman has always been my least favourite superhero, but I guess if anyone could prove me wrong it's probably Christopher Nolan.

Pacific Rim looks like a dumb/cheesy Godzilla movie in todays technology so not having high hopes for that one either.

Really looking forward to The Lone Ranger though.

@Davey

I know what you mean. For me the "social satire" stuff is enough to distinguish it from more typical blockbuster fare -- trite as its message is, a movie like Clash of the Titans doesn't even get THAT far -- but it's often held up as insightful in a way that it simply isn't.

The found footage thing is used a lot at the opening of the movie, and then progressively less and less throughout. Which, I thought worked really nicely. It sold the effect without making the narrative a slave to it.

But regardless of (or perhaps because of) its pretensions, District 9 was at least something different from the norm at the time. The novelty factor won't be enough to save Elysium if it has similar problems.
