Great article, though I disagree with your analysis. Yes, Skyfall's Bond was a bit older and more experienced than the man we see in Royale and Quantum. But it doesn't require that so many years have passed. Even a few years is long enough for many missions to have taken place.

SPOILER ALERT!

What threw Bond off of his game in Skyfall wasn't his age. It was his near-death experience. He stared his own demise in the face and it forced him to re-examine himself. It also physically debilitated him. This point was driven home repeatedly as we saw his right arm failing him over and over.

Bond wasn't feeling his age. He was feeling his mortality.

I'm one of those fans that adores the new direction of the films. The invincible, mythic Bond of the past was fun, but he's become stale and predictable to me. Craig's Bond is powerful and skilled, but also flawed and human. It's a character I can actually relate to, which I could never do with previous incarnations.

My point being that Skyfall isn't another reinvention of Bond. It is a natural progression of the mortal man we saw in the last two films.

Nice article Zimmerman, i havent ever been a Bond fan, prior Casino royale i just had watched "one of the Brosnan Bond films" but i really enjoyed Casino and totally loved "skyfall", some time ago you posted in your link section a very interesting article on "Cracked" ( http://www.cracked.com/article/18367_6-insane-fan-theories-that-actually-make-great-movies-better ) and the theory for Bond is very fitting for your point of view, because if both the 007 status and the "James Bond" name were a designation code, it could explain all the "Bonds" in the different time frames and situations, and provide the franchise more flexibility when writting...

Skyfall is my second favourite bond ever. Here's my list just thought I'd put it out there. I use Dr. No as a gauge because it was the first. Movies I thought that improved on the original I put above and ones worse go below. I must also say that the only bond I really was put off by was Die Another Day. I'll still watch it in a marathon tho.

1. Thunderball
2. Skyfall
3. Goldeneye
4. Casino
5. Goldfinger
6. The Spy Who Loved Me
7. For Your Eyes Only
8. From Russia With Love
9. Quantum of Solace
10. On Her Majesty's Secret Service
11. Live and Let Die
12. The Living Daylights
13. The Man With The Golden Gun
14. Dr. No
15. The World is Not Enough
16. You Only Live Twice
17. A View to a Kill
18. Tomorrow Never Dies
19. License to Kill
20. Moonraker
21. Diamonds are Forever
22. Octopussy
23. Die Another Day
