I don’t know, just because he always plays an outcast doesn’t mean it’s the same outcast. Hunter S. Thompson and Jack Sparrow are the only two of his characters that I can think of that are similar in physicality, voice, and mannerisms. I think he’s extremely versatile, even if it’s from within one archetype.

While I love Johnny Depp, & have followed his cinematic career from his 1st starring role in “Cry Baby”, I have to quibble with your designation of him as ‘versatile’. He plays one role: that of the loner, misunderstood but charming once you know him. Whether it’s the soft-hearted rocker of ‘Cry Baby’, the boy-with-scissors-for- hands of ‘Edward Scissorhands’ or his portrayal of Hunter S Thompson in ‘Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas’, every single role he’s played is that character.

Even his Cap’n Jack Sparrow holds true to this formula.

Just sayin’….
