Wes Anderson takes clothes very seriously. Each of his characters has a distinguishable wardrobe, with neat accessories and specific color palettes. That’s part of the reason why his movies are so enjoyable and unique. Throughout his career, Anderson has made a number of movies that are all linked together by their quirkiness, humor and style. His attention to detail is what sets him apart as a filmmaker. He’s one of my favorite auteurs, and because of it, I decided to put together a list of the 10 Best Movie Outfits in his movies. Also, if you’re still unsure on what/who to be for Halloween, maybe this list will help you decide.
Margot Tenenbaum in The Royal Tenenbaums
Margot Tenenbaum is a chain-smoking mess of a woman. She’s literary prodigy with major daddy issues who lives in a Lacoste dress, an oversized fur coat and a pair of brown loafers.
Max Fischer in Rushmore
Max Fischer isn’t your typical teenager, nor is he just another prep school boy. He’s a passionate kid who’s desperately trying to find out where he belongs. Personally, I always preferred him in his black Russian hat. It just made him look a little more crazy.
Jack Whitman in The Darjeeling Limited/Hotel Chevalier
Jason Schwartzman’s yellow bathrobe traveled through two movies – Anderson’s 13-minute short Hotel Chevalier and The Darjeeling Limited. That robe was a great choice.
Mr. Fox in Fantastic Mr. Fox
Mr. Fox’s cool, calm, collected attitude makes him one of Anderson’s best characters. And his wardrobe – the high-water corduroy pants and blazer are actually based on Anderson’s own style.
Sam Shakusky in Moonrise Kingdom
The only reason why I would want to a boy scout would be to wear an outfit like Sam Shakusky’s in Moonrise Kingdom. He makes that uniform look so cool.
Steve Zissou in The Life Aquatic
Bill Murray’s Steve Zissou is an unlikely style icon. His blue ensemble and red beanie, which he wears with absolutely everything, are legendary. I also love that it’s something he makes his whole crew wear. It’s what makes them all so adorable.
Social Services in Moonrise Kingdom
Tilda Swinton’s role in Moonrise Kingdom is brief. But she does make an impact, not just because she’s social services, but because she makes a striking first appearance. She looks like an awesome 60s’ flight attendant in that royal blue suit… very Jackie Brown.
Suzy Bishop in Moonrise Kingdom
The thing I love most about Suzy Bishop is her blue eyeshadow. For weeks after I saw the movie I would smear blue powder on my eyelids, just to feel like her. I also thought about buying binoculars and wearing them like a necklace. Don’t be surprised if you see a bunch of Suzy Bishops walking around on Halloween. She’s the next Margot Tenenbaum.
