Tim, now you're taking *me* back. Trying to figure out what the hell the game wanted you type to get you to the next part of the puzzle might well be the birth of the mini game as we know it.

Stefanos, what a lovely compliment, thank you. I'm glad I didn't merit a tl;dr. Ha ha! Also, all of these games are still available to play, two of them for free. Give 'em a shot! You might be surprised at how enjoyable they can be.

trashcanman, first of all—amazeballs name. Thanks for the salute and the kudos. Your post reminded me of a story the hubs told me a while back where he was telling some guys at work that I was a real gamer and none of them believed him. He told them, "dudes, she plays an online multiplayer game that's just text." And they all shut up until one of them said, "Hardcore." I've probably never been prouder. I'm glad you got a chance to experience some of these. In the world of gaming, I think text games are akin to classic literature.

Clear out, noobs; real old-school gamer in the house. Ms. Clemens, I salute you. I didn't really have a computer back when text based adventures were the thing, but I played some at my cousins' house and the experiences were as memorable as they were frustrating. But it really is amazing in this day where graphics are everything and you need dozens of buttons and immense coordination to do anything in a video game to remember when a black screen and a cursor could take you on an adventure where you could do anything you chose just by typing it. Great article.

Oh man, great article...this really took me back to my youth and playing "guess what adjective the parser is looking for" with a whole slew of Infocom games. I remember Planetfall, Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy, and Cutthroats most of all.

How far we've come... :-)
