Tech Sounds That We Unfortunately Don’t Get To Hear Anymore

Published by at 8:00 am under Images

Do you ever get nostalgia for things that used to piss you off?   I’ll give you a perfect example.   Remember having to blow on Nintendo cartridges to get the games to work?  Even though that totally annoyed you, its was like a “victory” of sorts when the game would work.

And it’s not just Nintendo I’m talking about.  This also applies to everyday stuff.   Stuff that used to bug you but there’s a small part of you that actually misses the aggravation.  Laptopmag put together an awesome picture series on sounds. we used to know and love (or hate).

Check out the pics and sound descriptions after the jump

The MAC OS “uh oh” Sound

The VHS rewinding sound

The sound of a floppy disk drive

The dial-up model handshake

An old school dial tone

The wind of a rotary phone

Boot-Up Beeps

“You’ve got mail!”

The Windows 95 Shutdown Sound

Dot matrix printout

CRT TV on and off sound

A very clicky keyboard

Gotta admit that I fucking love the modem handshake. I even have it as a ring tone.

You forgot one of the most important ones.. the sound of an actual non-electric typewriter. I think my generation was the last to even have “typewriting class” and I hated it but, I still have an old mechanical one I play with now while doing graphics. Nothing can quite sound like the return zip on a mechanical typewriter.

We have only silent keyboards now because no-one in their right mind wanted a keyboard that went CLINK CLINK CLINK everytime you typed. Besides early keyboards did not all have the clink clink option those came later.

I still hear the sound of VHS rewinding often, so HA! lol but I miss some of the other things, even if a few of them are before my time.

I still hear a lot of those all the time, but mostly because I’m surrounded by poor college students.

The sound of the film flapping as the end of the reel is reached
The record arm lifting from an LP and going back to its cradle
The clicks on a scratched LP

The sound of a 35mm projector behind you at a movie theater.

Wait, so I can’t actually post a link that plays some of these sounds? Lame.

I keep trying, but I can’t. I don’t know if it goes in for review?
