Dark city came out in 98. The matrix used some of the sets from Dark City. Thirteen floor was very good also, that milf babe from Boardwalk Empire is in it, and looks super hot.

this list could’ve easily been a Quadruple Feature tossing in the Thirteenth Floor and Dark City, but I guess these duels work better when the similarities are accidental and the Wachowskis have cited Dark City as inspiration for The Matrix…

this is a really cool concept for a column, but for the life of me I cannot think of other pairs to fit this other than obvious choices like say The Prestige – The Illusionist or Armageddon – Deep Impact.

11 Points made a list of movies but I don’t know if many of these fit the nerd coefficient for a column.

There was another flick out in 1999 called The Thirteenth Floor. Had the same story of a virtual reality being hidden from normal view. Good movie.

I think eXistenZ measures best against Dark City. The Matrix became a different kind of animal with its innovative visuals, tremendous action and just how well it has aged. The Matrix is eXistenZ plus Dark City plus Equilibrium and then some. eXistenZ has its virtues, but it was never that smart to begin with and it’s so badly dated, I mean, even The Fly holds up a lot better.
