The Ice King Cuts Parts Off Of Various Princesses To Build Himself A Bride
I did not exaggerate that headline at all. I am including this, to show you just how severe the damage he did was.
Yes, that is Princess Bubblegum, now lobotomized for your viewing displeasure.
Seeing a major character, cartoon or not, suddenly turned into a drooling vegetable was actually pretty shocking to me. Finn and Jake see this and decided they need to go to the Ice King’s lair and get all the parts back. Ok, that is good. Let’s fix this. So they get to the lair of the Ice King and they see what he has created and they pass out in disgust. Seriously, everytime they see her in the episode, they freak out and pass out in disgust. A penguin even vomits when she smiles at it. No joke.
And this is why:
Because she is an unGodly beast thrown up from the bowels of all your worst nightmares.
And the craziest part was, the whole episode is about how she knows she is a freak and a monster, and the Ice King, who now considers her his bride, spends the entire episode reassuring her how beautiful she is to him, and how is doesn’t matter what other people think as long as they love each other. It is sort of sweet, and you find yourself forgetting that this person is built up from the sliced off body parts off other people.
And just when you think it has reached an apex of insanity, the zombie princess ends up basically committing suicide, and slowly unraveling herself to give the parts back to their rightful owners until none of her is left.
So it is existential and nihilistic all at once. Just what kids love!
All kidding aside, it is that kind of writing that makes this show so exceptional.
The Fight King Orders Finn To Kill Jake
Wow, right? How many shows do you see in prime time that are NOT cartoons that have a lead character being told he needs to kill his best friend? None, which makes it extra insane that this is a cartoon. Well again, to understand what you are working with here, I will give you a little visual guidance on what the Fight King looks like:
See, another adorable character from Adventure Time just waiting to be immortalized in a plush toy.
So basically you have Finn and Jake fighting through waves and waves of dead soldiers in an attempt to appease the Fight King, and in the end, the Fight King says the final battle must be between Finn and Jake, and it must be TO THE DEATH!
As if that wasn’t twisted enough, the audience is slightly manipulated into believing it may happen. I mean, us adults watching the show know better. But for kids watching, it really is an incredibly creepy moment where you aren’t quite sure who the intended audience is, but you don’t care because it is so awesome.
Princess Bubblegum Gets Possessed
That title alone should indicate why this is here. It was this scene that inspired me to write this list, too. You see, I have this unnatural fear of the movie The Exorcist, and somehow, this episode played off of those fears brilliantly. We are not talking about a silly possession for a cartoon. We are talking head spinning, bed floating, speaking in different languages possession. This is some real deal stuff. Is it scary? No. But is it ballsy to put in a cartoon, hell yes.
I mean, just look at her:
Look at the cold, icy death within her eyes and her mangled demon arms.
And they did not play it out in a cute manner, either. She tosses Jake around and lights the entire room on fire. Some would call it hellfire. I call it a moment in a cartoon where it is clear this is not kids stuff. But yet, it has enough charm that is sort of still is.
Well, there is this, too :
Told you they didn’t hold back.
Ofcourse they save her. At no point do we ever doubt that will happen. But it is just the point that you basically end up watching a shortened, animated version of The Exorcist that seems like it is on LSD. What is there NOT to love about that?
Lumpy Space Princess singing the ” You Know You Wanna Slump Up On These Lumps” song. Yes, yes I do.
The zombie episode. They may have been candy, and bled sugar, but it was still a zombie episode.
Finn reveals his hair. Best. Moment. Ever.
Ricardio the heart guy. I won’t ruin the twist here, but I will tell you he is voiced by George Tekai, and this episode is pure awesome.
Any episode involving the character Tree Trunks. Man, when you see Tree Trunks, you know you are in store for some weird sh*t.
The Slow Love episode where Finn and Jake teach a giant snail how to seduce other snails. Wow, just wow.
The Fiona and Cake episode, which was like a Bizzaro world version of the show that spun off from some side art an animator on the show had done for fun.
And on a final note, the fan art for this show is some of the best in the world, so if you are a fan, you owe it to yourself to go seek some it out. I will leave you with just one example now to show you just how amazing it can get:
Yup, that amazing.
