Rob hates Twilight for all the reasons we do: they are bad books that have undeserved popularity and the fans are creepy and ignorant.

It’s ACTING. There is no rule that says an actor has to like the role, admire the character, or anything of the sort. All an actor has to do is do his best to make us believe he is the character while he is playing the role.

He isn’t saying, “Don’t go to the movie” he isn’t saying, “Don’t like Twilight,” he’s saying he doesn’t like the character of Edward, and I don’t blame him. That is his right.

What about vegetarians who work in restaurants which serve meat? Should they all quit, because they, personally don’t eat meat? Or, should they just starve to death because they’re too busy donating their paychecks to PETA?

I think a heap of people have nailed it when they ask the obvious question: Wouldn’t you do it for insane amounts of cash?

What i find interesting is the allegation (@Craig) that he lacks integrity by accepting a role in a series he obviously dislikes. I think it could be said if he actively contributed to the hype and promotion, shamelessly promoting the film, then came out and said he didn’t like the series. As it stands, he’s been upfront and honest: “Shitty job; great paycheck”.

It reminds me a little of Eddy Murphy, who’s been forward with everyone when they ask him why he makes so many terrible kiddie movies: (paraphrasing here) “I still get paid don’t i?” At least they’re both honest.

To be clear, Twilight is the kind of career-defining juggernaut that most any actor can build a career around, just look at Anna Kendrick, who turned a bit-part role in a twilight movie into several large performances (Up in the Air, Scott Pilgrim, 50/50).

We don’t ask dish-scrubbers to love their job and their work, why do we expect the same of people who get paid more?

If you had a boss and a job that you absolutely hated, but he gave you a huge promotion and let you pick a better job that you loved, Would you run around bad mouthing him? Or would you be grateful that even though you had such an awful start that you’re where you are now? Now, because of Twilight, Rob can pick the roles he plays. He couldn’t do that before “Edward” and he’s blessed that he can do that now.
I don’t believe that he should bad mouth the very thing that gave him his name! If it weren’t for the Twilight Saga. You wouldn’t know who he is and we wouldn’t even be having this conversation. Even if he doesn’t like he should keep it to himself, though there is freedom of speech, some things should just be kept personal. Why do we need to know that he dislikes the Saga?
As far as the “studio” not saying anything about it, i’m sure that they are outraged. But as you said they can’t just replace him because he is the face of “Edward.”
Not to mention tons of younger fans idolize him, and how does any of that make him look? What kind of example is that for his younger fans.

One on hand, he took the gig never knowing it was going to turn into a career-defining role in the way that it has. I sympathize with his wanting to create some distance from what he took as a job but what has turned into a bit of an albatross.

On the other hand, it sounds a little douch-y. And, based on other things he’s been in, he’s got room to improve as an actor anyway. I’m reserving judgment on his abilities until after seeing him in Cosmopolis. But I think it would be decent of him to just let Twilight be Twilight and suck it up.
