I Bet I Can Make You Like Robert Pattinson

Published by at 11:00 am under Movies

I can hear you through my monitor now. “What are you getting at Tassi? Are you turning into some sort of Twilight apologist or something?” Nope, rather I’m writing this to show that there is a distinct difference between actors BEING douchebags, and actors PLAYING douchebags. You all may hate Robert Pattinson as you only know him as the sparkly, weepy vampire in the Twilight trilogy, but fun fact, did you know that he actually hates the series more than you?

Below is a collection of quotes that has Rob expressing his true feelings about the movies, the books and Meyer herself, and his level of harshness will likely surprise you. By the end, I think you may even like the guy a little bit. Read on:

Found via StuffNZ.

On Meyer and the books:

“When I read it … I was convinced that Stephenie was convinced that she was Bella, and … It was like it was a book that wasn’t supposed to be published, like reading her – her sort of sexual fantasy about some – especially when she says that it was based on a dream, and it’s like, ‘Oh, then I had a dream about this really sexy guy’ and she just writes this book about it, and there’s some things about Edward that are just so specific that … I was just convinced that this woman is mad, she’s completely mad, and she’s in love with her own fictional creation.

“And I sometimes … Feel uncomfortable reading this thing, and I think a lot of people feel the same way, that it’s kind of voyeuristic … It creates this sick pleasure in a lot of ways.”

From a 2008 E! Online interview that’s been stripped from the internet:

“Girls often say that Edward’s ‘sooo perfect,’ but he’s not. I do not like people who try to exert control in a relationship, when there is an imbalance. This is very wrong and very strange.”

Last month in Brussels, as to why Cullen is such a d-bag:

“… The more I read the script, the more I hated this guy, so that’s how I played him, as a manic-depressive who hates himself.”

At Comic-Con on Breaking Dawn’s insane plot:

“Have sex, demon baby. No, they get married first, demon baby, Jacob falls in love with the little baby [laughs], then everyone tries to kill each other, but nothing happens. Oh, that’s the second one [laughs even harder].”

On the infamous sex scene:

“I wanted to have it as a line so much. [He switches to an ‘Edward’ accent] ‘I bit through all the pillows. Every. Single. One.’ And then he’d start crying. By the way, that’s what he should be ashamed of in the morning. All those beautiful pillows! Egyptian cotton! (Laughs) ‘I ruined this bed!'”

    No respect for anyone who paints their own abs, off-set, for funsies.

  • Eduardo

    Damn you! I never hated him but now I kind of like him!

  • Craig

    The fact that he still took the role even though he feels the way he does makes me disrespect him more. It’s called integrity, Rob.

  • Emilio

    Man, you just make him a male version of Katherine Heigl to me. Can both of them just crawl somewhere dark and die? Send the Bella chick with them too.

  • Russell

    I don’t hate him because of Twilight, I hat him because my always moans about his fans. Moaning when they want autographs and such. Like he is better than everyone else.

  • Tim

    Garbage or not, way to dump all over the thing that made you a millionaire and a household name. You had no problem participating in it. Hypocrite puppet.

  • illeaturfamily

    @Tim

    Can you not see the humor in this situation? I think it’s quite funny that he identifies with the twilight-hating camp more than the twihards. As for him dumping all over that which made him famous, who cares? If someone paid you a million dollars to take a crap you would do it. And you’d talk about how stinky it was all the way to the bank.

    You can’t call him a hypocrite if he’s never even tried to defend the literary and cinematic integrity of the books/movies.

    I don’t blame him one bit for taking a big fat paycheck for these movies and I think it’s hilarious that he’s so blunt about how poorly they’re put together.

  • Lara

    If he dislikes the movie so much then he should really donate all the money he made from it. I mean its what gave him his name. If it wasn’t for Edward Cullen, no one would even know Robs name. When he was in Harry Potter, How many people knew who he was? Or even cared for that matter? Besides that Most people can’t name any other movies that hes been in, even since the Twilight saga.
    Russell brought up a valid point though, He doesn’t treat his fans like he should. He acts like a big baby, because he has to take time out of his “oh so important” life to give a little bit of attention to the people who love and support him. I’m actually surprised that he still has any fans at all. I believe that they only love him for the things that they see on the big screen, because behind the scenes Pattinson is an awful person.

  • Bad Acid

    He always looked like Richard Kiel to me.

  • OTWarrior

    Michael Caine made a lot of movies that he admits were bad, but he needed the money. Before twilight, no one really knew who he was (apart from a vague role in the harry potter films). Now he has made himself into a recognized “brand” he is more able to choose the films he can do. Just my thoughts :)

  • Johnny D

    Those movies were an abomination as were the books, but I never hated the guy for doing them. People need work.

    Anyway, @Lara, lots of people dislike or hate their jobs, but you don’t see them donating all their earnings. That actually sounds quite absurd.

    Also, I’ve read he’s a down to earth, nice guy. I think it’s quite reasonable to get annoyed at times for intrusive, obsessed fans.

  • Jennifer

    Honestly I’ve always thought he’s hilarious. And who the hell cares how he treats the Twihard fans? Is he not allowed to be a normal guy? Wouldn’t you dislike it if a bunch of crazy obsessed teenagers followed you around? And like leaturfamily said, let’s not all pretend we wouldn’t do something we didn’t want to do for millions of dollars. I definitely would be in Twilight if I got a shitload of money for it, and I hate the films/ books with a passion. Integrity can go suck it!

  • Mheart

    This guy….
    I actually liked the first 2 1/2 books because they were truly Myers work, but the last 1 1/2 books were crap work because she had her stuff leaked and wasnt confident enough to go out with what she had… Pattinson doesnt like the books yet he plays the characters because he is a hypocrite and will do what he has to for money. He’s like that evil cool guy you know that dates the socially awkward girl but then tries to make up for it later with his cool friends by dissing her behind her back. Make up your mind, like it or not you chose to do the films so dont say anything bad when you are still kissing the girl who looks like shes addicted to many drugs…

  • Jim Lahey

    @Mheart

    Good luck finding a male to play Edward who doesn’t vehemently hate twilight. Why does a fresh actor with almost no roles under his belt have to take only roles he loves? That is a LUXURY, not the norm. How many jobs have you had that you absolutely loves? I bet it’s less than the number of jobs you’ve had that you hated.

    @Misc. Idiots

    All you braindead idiots need to understand what “hypocrite” means before you throw out accusations. He never pretended to like the series; he was doing a job for a paycheck, the same as 99% of the world. If you love your job, be thankful for that, don’t rip on people who take jobs they don’t like because of the money. Investment bankers usually hate their jobs and hours, but they get paid so much money they only have to go through with it for a couple years before they have $1 million saved up so they can do something else. You do what you have to in order to achieve the maximum success in your life. I think you all are just upset to hear that someone doesn’t like your precious teen girl’s book series. Does it really ruin the movies for you to know that Rob doesn’t genuinely feel the things he’s saying?

    THAT’S IT! All you girls have spent so much time fantasizing about Edward that you don’t even see Rob as a real person. When he said he hated the series, you all heard Edward Cullen say that, not Rob. Jesus, learn to differentiate between the actor and the character. It’s not his fault all you twihards are teen girls with overactive, fantasical imaginations.

  • Bert

    I’m sure he signed on for the first movie for the cash, and to make his name known. Most of these type films have clauses in the contracts which state that the actor will continue to act in any sequels that occur. So I’m thinking he’s contractually obligated to appear in any more they make.

    David Cross has said much the same about those dreadful Chipmunks movies.

  • Lara

    @Johnny D

    I don’t believe that he should keep money that he doesn’t deserve. By bad mouthing a movie that made his career truly shows that he doesn’t deserve it. He isn’t grateful.
    I find it truly absurd that you think its ok to get irate with any fan. No matter how long your day has been or how bad you feel, those are the people that make your career what it is.
    I personally don’t like anything about the Twilight Saga, and I’m not taking up for it at all. I even agree with some of the things that Robert had to say about it. But it is still wrong for him to say and do the things he does just because he thinks he can.

  • Lara

    My point is even if he did take the job for the money, he shouldn’t bad mouth it to the public. Twilight is the only reason that he will be able to choose a role that he likes and wants in the future.

  • Johnny D

    @Lara

    Was going to reply, but Jim Lahey (above) said it all.

  • http://www.unrealitymag.com Paul Tassi

    @Jim Lahey

    The first time we agree on something! A sight to behold!

  • Michelle_Sanders

    i still dont like him lol

  • illeaturfamily

    @Jim Lahey

    Well put. Was thinking along the same lines when I previously commented.

  • trashcanman

    Nice find, Tassi. You not only made me like Pattinson, you made me read a Twilight article, which I have not done in months. Well done. And yeah, guys, if somebody paid you millions of dollars to work in a sewer you’d do it, and you wouldn’t be a hypocrite for saying you don’t like the smell of shit. I never disliked the guy (or Stewart) since they are just actors playing a part. It’s Meyer who sickens me.

  • Matt

    I still feel a bunch of nothing about everyone involved in these films. I do have to say to everyone complaining about him dissing these terrible films, if any of you have ever stated that you dislike your jobs than you are no better than him just much less well payed. Stop hating it’s not a good look.

  • Brian

    @ Lara

    Why exactly do you think he doesn’t deserve the money that he’s made from the movies? The movies have been successful, and as a part of that success he should be able to be compensated for it (it’s not like they could have replaced him after it became so popular, thus his recognizablility as “Edward Cullen” definitely contributed to future sales after the first one). Your argument comes off like someone who thinks that complaining about their job is criminal and people should be held fiscally responsible for it. Would you take money away from a garbageman who complained about how disgusting parts of his job are and how he smells like garbage when he gets home?

    What he’s saying is his opinion of the series and character, and obviously the studio doesn’t care because it hasn’t replaced him. You would rather him lie about his feelings about the series when asked questions about it, or do you think that he shouldn’t be able to have feelings about it because of what it has done for him? I would like to see you walk away at your chance to make it in an industry that you’ve worked your whole life to get into just because you didn’t like a part of your job. I’d question him more if he did that, because even though the Twilight movies were a shit-sandwich, you don’t throw away a lottery ticket like that. Any number of no-name actors (which is what he was) in his position would do the same, principles be damned.

  • Diva D

    I’m of two minds on this subject.

    One on hand, he took the gig never knowing it was going to turn into a career-defining role in the way that it has. I sympathize with his wanting to create some distance from what he took as a job but what has turned into a bit of an albatross.

    On the other hand, it sounds a little douch-y. And, based on other things he’s been in, he’s got room to improve as an actor anyway. I’m reserving judgment on his abilities until after seeing him in Cosmopolis. But I think it would be decent of him to just let Twilight be Twilight and suck it up.

  • Lara

    @Brian

    If you had a boss and a job that you absolutely hated, but he gave you a huge promotion and let you pick a better job that you loved, Would you run around bad mouthing him? Or would you be grateful that even though you had such an awful start that you’re where you are now? Now, because of Twilight, Rob can pick the roles he plays. He couldn’t do that before “Edward” and he’s blessed that he can do that now.
    I don’t believe that he should bad mouth the very thing that gave him his name! If it weren’t for the Twilight Saga. You wouldn’t know who he is and we wouldn’t even be having this conversation. Even if he doesn’t like he should keep it to himself, though there is freedom of speech, some things should just be kept personal. Why do we need to know that he dislikes the Saga?
    As far as the “studio” not saying anything about it, i’m sure that they are outraged. But as you said they can’t just replace him because he is the face of “Edward.”
    Not to mention tons of younger fans idolize him, and how does any of that make him look? What kind of example is that for his younger fans.

  • Ugo Strange

    Just for the record, I ALWAYS hate THINGS, very rarely do I hate people. I can’t know Rob for gettin’ a paycheck off some lame grown woman’s teenaged wet-dreams. He’s just a guy in this world tryin’ to make his paper the best way he can! More power to him!

  • ilikeicecream

    I find all the vehemence against him interesting here (@Lara).

    I think a heap of people have nailed it when they ask the obvious question: Wouldn’t you do it for insane amounts of cash?

    What i find interesting is the allegation (@Craig) that he lacks integrity by accepting a role in a series he obviously dislikes. I think it could be said if he actively contributed to the hype and promotion, shamelessly promoting the film, then came out and said he didn’t like the series. As it stands, he’s been upfront and honest: “Shitty job; great paycheck”.

    It reminds me a little of Eddy Murphy, who’s been forward with everyone when they ask him why he makes so many terrible kiddie movies: (paraphrasing here) “I still get paid don’t i?” At least they’re both honest.

    To be clear, Twilight is the kind of career-defining juggernaut that most any actor can build a career around, just look at Anna Kendrick, who turned a bit-part role in a twilight movie into several large performances (Up in the Air, Scott Pilgrim, 50/50).

    We don’t ask dish-scrubbers to love their job and their work, why do we expect the same of people who get paid more?

  • Lara

    I would do it for the money. But I would NOT bad mouth it.

  • JessKitty

    Laura, following your logic, then every person who has played the part of a bad guy, or someone they don’t like, should donate their paycheck, right?

    It’s ACTING. There is no rule that says an actor has to like the role, admire the character, or anything of the sort. All an actor has to do is do his best to make us believe he is the character while he is playing the role.

    He isn’t saying, “Don’t go to the movie” he isn’t saying, “Don’t like Twilight,” he’s saying he doesn’t like the character of Edward, and I don’t blame him. That is his right.

    What about vegetarians who work in restaurants which serve meat? Should they all quit, because they, personally don’t eat meat? Or, should they just starve to death because they’re too busy donating their paychecks to PETA?

  • http://seankale.weebly.com/index.html Seantheartist

    he’s actually a really good actor. just cast in a shitty role, and made lots and lots of money.

  • jess

    he deserves the money he has earned. he worked for it, and at least a dishwasher doesn’t have to put up with shit like this.. public criticism because he could play his part too well? well enough that people have forgotten that he is not Edward, he is an actor, he is paid to pretend. I feel bad for him.

  • Orion

    He took the Twilight role because he had no idea how big the books were (in the states). He thought it was a small-time project based on a book with a small audience. He knew they were bad, and he was disgusted when he found out they were popular and successful. You should have found some of the quotes along these lines. Hearing that was what made me like the guy, and feel sorry for him.

    Also, you should include that phase he went through of dissing vagina. I always felt he was trying to be as crass and off-putting as he could be in an attempt to alienate his creepy tween fangirl audience.

    Rob hates Twilight for all the reasons we do: they are bad books that have undeserved popularity and the fans are creepy and ignorant.

  • a person

    all of you can keep pretending you wouldnt whore yourself out for some stupid role if you got millions of dollars for it.
